I think I already know the answer to this but wanted to ask others. I haven't done much reading up on this particular subject,so here it goes.

I'm wondering if how I grow a male plant will affect its pollen?? Say I grew a bunch of males under poor conditions and in solo cups and a bunch of males in 5 gallon fabric pots under good conditions, would the plants grown in good conditions produce pollen with superior genes?? Or would they be similar,as long as I picked the males that showed the best traits??

Short answer is both yes and no, LOL! Yes in the fact that we don’t really understand epigenetics very well when it comes to exact factors affecting gene expression. So yes, the environmental conditions can alter the genes that are expressed in an organism.

The no comes into play because an organism’s DNA isn’t organized into “good” or “bad” genes, and as far as we know now it’s not the case that only good genes express in good conditions and vice versa.

Even then higher organisms typically have more than one “version” of a gene (called alleles) that separate during pollen formation, and it’s a 50/50 shot at which offspring gets which allele…regardless of environmental conditions. So say your selected male is heterozygous for the gene(s) responsible for the trait you want, that male can pass a recessive allele that results in a completely different phenotype for the trait you selected…which is why phenohunting filial progeny and stabilizing lines to express a subset of desired traits is key.

I've had a 4 inch male pollenate a Tent full of eager virgins before...by Accident....but I haven't Seen any ill effects in the offspring in....pffft....40 generations...

If I Miss a cross I want....I would germ a set in a small pot to get a male...coz they flower faster.... :headbang:

Making a cross for yourself....?...........the risk is so negligible as to be almost non existant.....:pass:

Happy Friday.....:friday:
