Greetings all! Just wondering if anyone can offer advice on quiet fans? I grow in a DR60II tent in a closet in my bedroom, i bought my set up as a package which came with a basic vents TT 4" fan, it does the job for my small tent in terms of extraction but the noise is now getting on my good lady's nerves and she's aking me to take a break from growing, i'm currently on my 3rd consecutive grow so she's been pretty good at putting up with the noise! It's not really audible anywhere else in the house but obviously it's noticeable in the room we sleep in! I've seen the home made solution with building a box and filling it with expanding foam but i'm unsure how effective that is for the effort required? does anyone have any experience of the cheaper acoustic fans is the sound reduction of a sufficient level to justify the price? don't want to stop this fantastic hobby as i've only just started! so many strains to try yet!

I think most blower fans will give off some noise, especialy on high. You could wrap some insulation like you use in your walls around the blower but not the filter and see if this helps quiet the noise .

Thanks namvet, I've considered doing that but worried about fan overheating? I run my fan constantly, how detrimental would it be to the plants if I got a timer for the fan and ran it an hour on hour off during lights off? I'm currently running 18-6 so it would 3 hours in total with no fan running?

Being that sound is the concern, when you sleep shut off the 4" inline fan and just run a small quiet oscillating fan for air circulation. Should have no negative impact at all.

i tried making the foam box myself possibly with that same fan but it didnt work great. i just bought a new fan, might have just been me though.
can you not move it to another closet somewhere? suspending your fan on bungie ties helps a little bit too if its the vibrations of the fan against the bars.
bigger fans using a speed controller to run slower are quieter than small fans on full if moneys no problem.
maybe switch lighting types to low watt led for easier cooling?

with any fan you cant really stop the sound of it sucking air through the filter which can be loud enough.
also get acoustic ducting itll help slightly.

if temps allow do what Grow-Da-Herb said, and if they dont maybe change your light cycle so they will be ok.

Daytona and ecoplus make some very powerful and quiet 120mm fans. I've burned up 8 other 120mm fans trying to keep my tent cool. Just bought this Daytona and run it non stop with no problems so far. Its pretty quiet as fans go.

Bgrt is correct...there is no such thing as a silent fan but you can also find some acoustically tuned fans. Often used in sound studios and schools for the visually imparted.

Thanks guys for the replies, i have a small oscillating fan in the tent so gonna knock the main fan off tonight and leave the tent door slightly open too, i was worried about a big rise in humidity, didn't want to open tent in the morning and find water running down the sides! but to be honest i struggle with low humidity throughout my grows, it usually sits @ 30% occassionaly reaching 40% so i'm guessing a little bit extra won't hurt them. I think the other half will appreciate the quiet as she nods off, doesn't bother me so much as i'm the toker so i'm usually out like a light after my evening medication :toke:

Just an update guys, Have been knocking the main fan off during the dark period and just leaving the small fan on for circulation, There has been no adverse effects on the ladies in fact they've thrived! as i said before i struggled with low humidity, sometimes struggling to get out of the 20's despite leaving wet cloths and saucers of water in the tent, now with a few hours with the fan off my humidity is at a much better level and stays relatively stable throughout the day and the girls are a lovely lush green, also my other lady is getting some better shut eye so i should be able carry on with this wonderful hobby...

In the past I have been kept awake by fan noise from my grow cab in my bedroom. so much so I had to use ear plugs to sleep at night.
I ended up building a box and filling it with hollow fiber around my fan (the suff you get in pillow and duvets). It made a great differnece.
I also added a fan speed controller as the fan was more powerful than I needed, so buying a larger fan and running it at half speed is somethig to think about.
Silencers will also help by reducing the wooshing sound produce by air exiting your fan.
Now I have switched to all LED lighting my fan speed is even lower and everything is now very stealthy.

Peace
