Base of stem, dying?

Muddy always has such good advice. I don't use hydrogen peroxide but if Muddy says it works I'm sure it does.

Muddy and I do a lot of things different but as Budda says "there are many rivers that all lead to the sea".

I use plain old black coffee to prevent damp off. Yup just mix it about 10 parts water to 1 part coffee and water your seedlings with it. Voila no damp off. Does the coffee mixture provide slight fertilizing affect? Dammed if I know but one would think it probably does.

Damn, I just made up a mix for my to-be magicD including the crystals and and slow release... Yeah as I read down the list on the bags the water retention was really pushed. To begin with, I thought that was a good thing so would need less water less often.

ah okay, I might not bother with the action suggested if more for seedlings.

I live in Northern Australia. Winters ending, high humidity. earth around here is crap, kills seedlings. seed still in water so stilll time.

If I cant get other option soon ill be concidering the coffee idea if the treatmentis indeed needed. Muddy that last guess seems right on the money.

Will be definity be looking into none slow release mixes and some perlite. MIght get them monday when get paid.

Thanks again, willl update this abit to see what comes of it.

I live in Northern australia( the tropics, high humidity etc.)

I'm not sure what is available to you in Australia. You want to look for something that is basically just sphagnum peat moss and perlite, maybe with some worm castings, composted manure or guano. After a quick search, Peats Soil and Garden Supplies looks like they have some good ones. See what you can find and post the info here. We'll give you a thumbs up or down on it.

Weed likes to almost completely dry out between waterings. Too much water can suffocate the roots and prevent much needed oxygen from reaching them. So best to not use the cyrstals.

We've got a few other members from Australia. Hopefully one of them will see this and maybe have some suggestions for you on good soil.

Such variety on Peats Soil and Garden Supplies kind of vague info on site, a lot of slow release and laying of turf conditions, will keep looking till I can get to shops.(wrote down main ingridients you suggested last)
I do try to let them dry out a lot before a small sureface layer spashes of water away from stem at this point first inch or 2 of soil is bone dry. That i think, was not the case as seedlings. watered a lot more and each day.

Thanks Muddy

Best way to water is by the weight of the pots. Get a feel for them when they are dry, then only water when they feel that way. When you do water, give them a good soaking till about 10% runs out the bottom of the pots. The run off is important to keep salts, a bi product of nutrient breakdown, from building up in the soil.

"good soaking" and " run off" Gives me flash backs to drowning my first.:help:

I made it to the shop today and picked up a bag of Perlite and a bag of Vermiculite. Emptied out alot of the mix had in pot I had waiting for Magic D and added good portions of them. Here's a pic, look any better than the overly barky pot Muddy? Plan to drop seed tonight or in morning

BTW: PJEM seems to be recovering, left it 5 days no water, then sprinkled some on before being out all today, came home to some vigerous growth.

EDIT: Can't show pic, I'll be back..

Thankyou if someone fixed that. 2012-07-02 21.09.21.jpg

That looks much better than what you had before.
