Grow Mediums Auto’s on Auto-Pilot

Hello Again. I'm a tad late starting this journal so I am going to do a pictorial summary up to the present. A note of sadness. This was to be my Dark Devil grow however, both beans germinated then died in the coco without ever sprouting. Ah well, I moved on. I am growing four autoflower strains currently. I have a blueberry Auto (ILGM), Amnesia Haze Auto (ILGM), AK47 Auto (Gifted) and a Purple Haze Auto (GenoFarm).

The BBA, AK47 and AHA all sprouted on, wait for it, 4/20/18. The PHA was a replacement for the DD's so she sprouted on 5/1/18. Two of these plants are going outside in a backyard plot as soon as fear of frost passes in another couple of weeks.

My Set up and Details:

Grow Area
39"x39"x60" No name grow tent
6" Inline Fan (440cfm) and 6" Carbon Filter vented out basement window.

Lighting
4 x 300w Hydro Galaxy 9 Band LED = 540 wall watts
1 x 400w Roedro COB = 210 wall watts

Nutrients/Supplements
Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect Sensi Grow/Bloom A&B
Technaflora Magical (Cal/Mag)
Advanced Nutrients Voodoo Juice
Advanced Nutrients Rhino Skin
Advanced Nutrients Sensizym
Advanced Nutrients Big Bud
Advanced Nutrients Bud Candy
Advanced Nutrients Overdrive
Drip Clean

Medium
Coco Coir GH Premium 5kg brick (Going with straight coco vs a perlite mix. Also no hydroton or other medium in pot bottom)

Pots
2 x Autopot system with air domes and 3.9 gallon pots
2 x 3.9 gallon pots with air domes (Hand Water in tray similar to AP’s)

Each pot was given 1.5L of 5.8 ph, 2ml/L voodoo juice, 1ml/L Calimagic and 1/2teaspoon of Great White/5gallons 24 hours prior to sowing the beans and allowed to warm up under constant lighting and drain well.

Today marks Day 21 for the three ladies born on 4/20 (AHA, AK47A and BBA) and Day 10 for PHA

All three 21 day old plants have been connected to the autopot reservoir and pumped air at 7lpm each:

Initial Nute Mix
15L (or approx 4 gallons)
AN pH Perfect Sensi Grow A & B 1.5ml/L or 22.2ml
MagiCal 1.5ml/L or 22.2ml
AN Rhino Skin 1ml/L or 14.8ml
Drip Clean 1ml/10L or 1.5ml
De Chlor 2 drops/gal or 8 drops

PHA is at Day 10 and she got approx 750ml of the above mix minus the Rhino.

BBA is not in the AP but in a close fitting tray that I will keep 1 - 1.5" deep of nute solution with air pumped in (so fairly close mimic of the autopot process. I am planning to rotate the three plants every three days thereby giving equal time out of the system since I have only two aqua valves and trays.

How come you're not using perlite this time?

And are you PH'ing your feed water or not since using PH perfect?

And do you plan to rotate in top watering for whatever plant is not in the AP tray/valve? I think occasional top watering with autopots is a good to do sometimes. I just did it last night to get a top dressing batch of biochar/wormcastings/grainflour in to the root system. I also put holes in the medium using a truncheon around the edge of the pot down to the bottom so I can get things down to the root system like the biochar.

Sorry to hear about the Dark Devils. They are an interesting grow, even if I don’t like the smoke. Looks like you have bounced right back.

I ran out of perlite, saw others were omitting it and decided to give it a try. So far, so good.

I put my pH meter in long term storage. I do not ph anything (unless I start to have issues)

I am rotating the plants every three days (minus the PHA sprout) to let them all get equal time in the autopot tray.
The third plant (not in the autopot tray) sit's in a close fitting tray (baking pan) and I bottom water. all pots have airdomes.
I'm not opposed to top watering if needed or to deliver a special blend of nutes but so far, only top watering is prior to hook up to the res.

I’m a big believer in something a sage dabber from the Denver of Colorado told me once and smoke by their advice. She told me, “Always smell your weed before purchasing a strain to smoke. If you like the smell, you will not only like the smoke more, you will get higher and benefit more because of it.”

So with that said, I thought I had never found a strain that I did not like the smell at least, a little bit. Even the strongest skunks are usually appealing to me and then I grew the majestic SS Dark Devil. To me, after curing, it smells like turpentine and not even in a nice way. I can smoke it, but I’m not really enjoying it near as much as say LSD or Auto Mazar. This isn’t saying it will smell like that to you, heck Im a part of a small genetic group that thinks cilantro smells like dirty feet. Don’t get me wrong, I loved growing it and really enjoyed their colors, but I gave away the better part of that grow. I could have hashed it out, they are pretty frosty, but feared after the work I might dislike the end result more.

So there’s the long answer, the short is I don’t like the smell or the taste.

We are not dissimilar in this fashion. Smell is a large part of my life, in all aspects. I initially pushed aside my green crack for similar reasons. It has improved with more cure but frankly, it smells funky in the raw state and tastes strange to me. I gave away and sold all of what I grew outdoors last year because it just tasted like sh*t. I do value the smell but it's all about that first hit/taste for me and as this growing thing goes on I am sure I will become more of a snob /s

So I think I get it and you eased my pain of losing $30 worth of coveted beans!! I can say, I hope this ak47 auto tastes even a fraction as good as the local ak47!! I'm also leary of writing off strain grown only with chem fertilizers. While I am not an organic nut or anything, I suspect my buddies outdoor grown dope with only natural nutes (kelp, fish emulsion etc) tastes really good in part, because of these factors.

At this stage, minus any major issues, I am on track to have some producers in the tent in my opinion. I know the blueberry tastes and smells terrific, the rest are unknowns.

OMG

You have this one dialed in. They look beautiful and so green, so healthy and they look like poster children for the weed festival poster. They look so alive. Yes, that is right ALIVE.


I know for myself it is hard some time to see the colas as the buds get in the way. So from this side, it looks perfect.


I also only use coco in my auto pots. Somebody is going to have a FULL TENT !!!!!!!!!
