OK... I'm going to quote myself and partially retract that overly brief unqualified statement "no comparison".last year in the ground vs. this year in 7gal. pots... no comparison.

Those pictures are accurate, last years outdoor in the ground was more than twice as big as this years outdoor in pots... but these are outdoor grows with lots of variables. The biggest I can think of was that last year I started later and had a warmer start to the plants, this year I started earlier and had a cooler earlier growth period. After the early cold period, this year we had extreme heat, and I really have no idea what impact that might have had.
So, in reconsidering this, I think it's important to acknowledge the impact of temperature differences especially on young plants and also during the full life of the plant, as one inconsistent variable in the size disparity.
I stand by my experience; I think that plants in the ground have the potential and likelihood of growing bigger, but for accuracy sake I do not want to imply that I believe that under any circumstances this will always be the case. Just sayin'.
