I also top at the third node but.......you must have strong genetics. Not every auto responds the same way to topping and LST. The best auto come from Spain, almost super autos. After topping,I remove the first and second nodes then pin that lady all the way to the dirt, being careful not to break the stem.As each branch develops they to are pinned down and each consecutive branch until she starts to flower. Now each branch grows straight up,allowing excellent light penetration. As a example,I had a total dry weight from one plant of 166 gr. and that was not a super auto, but a blueberry kush auto from Nirvana. On the other side,a Super Skunk auto from the same breeder almost died every time I tried to train it.Now I have a plant with about 20 tops no bigger then a pencil....live and learn.Do your homework and never be afraid to try something new

I let an auto grow to at least 4 or 5 nodes before topping. More stable for the plant to recover well from the topping. But each to there own.

For me topping is left only for very tall stretchy plants. And never Done before 5 nodes. Done right LST gives better results. Some strains respond great to topping others not so much. I've also done mainlining/manifolding with autos and have gotten great results as well. My advice it to grow the strain out without any toping to see it's grow structure before hand. There's so much debating on toping and defoilation you will never get a clear cut answer on if it's good or not. I think it depends on the grower, the growers setup, the strain, and experience level. The best grow setup is the one that works for you. There is no definitive guide or one size fits all there's to many factors at play.
