You must have downloaded the un compiled source code. Common occurrence in Open Source. GIMP has a good installer

You should give it a second chance. You will learn the interface in 5 minutes or less by just pulling down the menus. Any questions feel free to pm me any time.
Or we can start a gimp thread and any interested can join in and contribute.
