Sand will keep them at bay as long as it is coarse. Anything jagged sharp works. Their skin is super sensitive that is why they attack babies in the garden the most. They love my cucumbers the most so when I first plant I just surround them with some sand.
anyone try diatomaceous earth?
 
Yeah this winter hasn't been that bad, alot of ice. I haven't fed them yet. Just letting them clean up acorns and apples. If we get much more snow I'll probably break down and buy them some corn
