Had a buddy gift me seeds labeled RQS Diesel Auto. I planted 2 of them in late June knowing the auto plant would finish in September, well in front of any potential frost which happens in my area mid-Nov as a norm.

Grew them outside in 5G fabric pots figuring the plants would be semi-small and the 5G pot would be fine. About mid-August, I noted there were no signs of the plant flowering. They kept getting bigger and bigger, and soon they were well over my head and 7 feet tall. I didn't LST or train them since they were auto plants and I wanted a quick easy grow.

Long story short, I faced a frost and had to harvest them on or around week 18. The trichomes were all cloudy and some were amber so I figured all was fine to go ahead and cut them down. But this is a case of mislabeled ID since these do not exhibit the characteristics of any auto plant I've ever grown. I think it is a sativa dominant hybrid photo, but again, I'm asking for help.

I didn't take a pic of the full plants, but they were HUGE. I cut and trimmed some of the fattest buds I've ever harvested. The top colas were easily the size of the calf of my legs, and the sub-colas were darn near as big. In the pic you'll see a partially trimmed bud on a white towel that measures 13"x13" for reference. The other larf bud I left all the leaves so you could get a leaf ID. The partially trimmed bud shown

was about half-way down the plant, and I have never seen plants so loaded with monster buds as these.

Since he called them RQS Diesel auto seeds, is it possible these are RQS Diesel Photo plants he mid-identified? I've never grown a Diesel before, so any help to ID these plants would be very helpful.

Definitely looks sativa to me, so maybe it was just a plant that missed its auto trigger. It does happen, and indoors the grower is forced to go to 12/12 to trigger flowering. RQS is a good operation, so I think it unlikely that they screwed up the label.

My vote is you got a properly labelled seed, but one whose genetics were not quite up to speed in the auto department.

Whatever, it looks like you got a spectacular harvest out of the grow, and it seems given your trichs that you got the lady just about bulls-eye mature. Congrats on a really fine outdoor grow. :pighug:

Its weed, and a photoperiod. Other than that, unless your sending a clipping off for testing, that's about as close as you'll get.

Overall size of plant says sativa dominant, but as far as is it diesel? Not going to be able to tell that from pics.

2 seeds both photo makes me think either mislabeled from RQS, or more likely, a mixup in the way your buddy stores his seed. If it was your buddy's mistake, might be able to narrow it down by seeing what else they have in their collection. I've had seed vials fall out of the packaging in my containers before. Luckily just one at a time, so finding its home was easy.

Diesel is named for an obvious trait, it smells of heavy diesel fuel. But, grow medium and style can play a part in how that presents as well.

Thanks much @Olderfart and @Arthur. My buddy had removed the seeds from their original packaging and sent them to me in a small vial that he had labeled in his handwriting. In all actuality it was almost a year ago, so I'll probably never know much more than I know now.

It really never had a high smell profile, and I don't detect any diesel aromas. This strain will remain a mystery other that we all believe it is heavily sativa dominant and most likely a photoperiod strain since both plants reacted the same. I may be able to get a flavor profile once I dry and cure...so we shall see later on.

I do know I have a heck of a harvest which I had only figured on a few ounces from an auto harvest. Unless I am way off, I should have 2 lbs of dried cured bud if I calculate 20-25% of green weight ends up as my final cured weight. Not bad for a couple of plants in 5G pots.

Thanks!

Those are the best accidents to have. Aw darn I have 2 elbows instead of half of 1!

Some of my best smoke over the years came from unknown bagseed. Then your kickin' yourself for not cloning, or not having the room to keep a mother.

Now you are talkin, @Arthur. Once I test the cured product, I can take notes of the type of effect, potency, etc. The good thing is...he sent me 5 seeds and I still have 3 left. I've never attempted to root a cutting off a mother plant, but once I look it up, I may give this a try. Of course it all depends on how I feel about the smoke once cured, but I would like to try a new technique and learn to do this.

Cloning is the way to go with photos. Most of the big name strains were "cuts only" no seeds available. Gelato 33 is an example. They grew out a ton of plants, it was #33 that had the juice, and was then cloned for mass production. (And then used for breeding projects) Even breeding back to itself dirties up the gene expression. I know some growers around here that have had the same plant going for a couple decades. Pretty much if it has a number attached you can bet it at least came from something that was "clone only" at one time.

Perhaps, but an entertaining one, for which thanks! I didn't realize where the strain numbers come from. Sadly, my life will not organize around clones, so seeds will have to suffice.
