Hello there!
I have a stupid question that i would really like to be answered. I tested my carbon filter - inline fan set up with a burned cigarette smoke and had a sniff in the exhaust and all i could smell was the burned cigarette smell. Is this normal? Carbon filters can not scrub this smell? I haven't started any grow just yet, i just wanted to make sure that everything works like a treat first.
I have a 0.8mx0.8mx1.8m tent, a new 5"carbon filter with 250mm length and a 5" inline fan which are connected like this: filter-duct-fan-air and i am drawing air from the filter ( not pushing) inside the tent.
The filter is inside the tent and the fan is outside the tent sitting at the top. Am i getting paranoid or this is something usual? I even sprayed with perfume inside the tent and still could smell the aroma of the perfume in the exhaust. Am i doing something wrong? Please chime in!

A properly set up tent is under negative pressure, literally the sides of the tent should suck in quite q bit. if the carbon filter is in good shape, and the filter fan combo are of adequate size, no odor will escape. Fan needs to be capable of moving 3 times the volume of air in the tent every minute. A filter can be overpowered, but cigarettes is how I used to test my setups, back when I smoked.

did you double check to see if you have the intake and outlet correct on the fan? It's the simple stuff that gets me at times :wall:

@Arthur Thank you for your time answering.

The carbon filter is new, it has 240m3/h rating and the fan is used for one grow only and has 2 speeds (181low and 218m3/h high). If i am doing the math correctly it should be: 0,8mx0,8mx1,8m=1,152m3 x3x60= 207,36m3/h. So in first speed i am getting a little low?

With my passive intake open i just put a small 5" piece of ducting and i see a negative pressure in the tent. Not to much though... The weird thing is that in theory if i open another passive intake hole i should see a bigger negative pressure, but in reality the opposite thing happens!!! the less i open the intake the more the negative pressure is. I am so confused.

Negative pressure comes from restricted air in tent, by opening the I take more you are allowing the air to move more freely. I'm not sure if negative pressure is needed though. You don't have negative pressure outdoors so why is it needed inside?

Next thing is brand, when buying anything for the grow you should research before even thinking about buying.

What brand do you have?
Did you check reviews to see if it's a legit filter?

@Kyote thank you for your time also.
The filter is inside the tent and is connected to the ducting with a flexible clamp and the other side of the ducting to the inline fan again with a another flexible clamp. The fan is outside the tent and on top of the roof. On the up side of the fan no ducting, just goes straight to the room.

the smell particals from exhaled ciggy smoke are too small to be trapped by the carbon filter.the white cloth traps bigger particals like dust that would otherwise clog up the carbon filter much prematurely.
:pighug:

Did you go inside the tent and zip it up before lighting the cig or squirting perfume?

@LazyNhazy It's a cheap filter not too long or too heavy like others that i have seen, the brand is airontek, it's italian made. I have not seen any reviews yet, but i have searched the internet with no results.
