I’m about to start a grow and I plan on planting seeds directly into my medium (promix hp) I’ve only ever grown outdoors prior to this and always planted directly into my final pots with no issues. My very simple and basic question is this... If planting seeds directly into their final pots indoors, do you need to have your lights on right away? Or do you wait til they break the surface then turn on your lights? I’ll be growing 3 plants with each having their own autocob (from BigSm0) but for the first few weeks I’m sure one will do for the 3. Thanks in advance for sharing your views.

Don't need lights until they break ground. Just need to be warm. I plant in my bedroom to start, so I watch twice a day for the moment it breaks the surface and it keeps the dirt at the right temperature.

Sent from my comfy chair. Link to my grows.

I don't think you do. They need an environment that is moist, warm and dark. So lighting on a seed that is germinating under a substrate/medium would not need any light. You might even say you should not have any lights on. Make sure you have a nice consistently steady heat though. 80 degrees is the sweet spot from what I've read. And don't soak your promix. Just keep it nice and moist. And put a humidity dome on top until they sprout.

Also recommend getting a mycorrhizae product like Great White or Orca and put that in the hole you're going to drop your seed in to.

I've been using moist tissue to germ but thinking of switching to dropping them in coco in solo cups instead and let them germ there.

What nutrients are you going to use?

Thanks so much for the replies and advice. I really appreciate it!

I’ll be using the full line of Advanced Nutrients using TaNg’s feeding schedule from a few years back. I’ll be growing 3 Sour Crack from Mephisto in a 2x4 in 3 gal airpots.

Good to hear. That Advanced Nute Perfect PH Tang schedule is great. I'm using is easy/simple version and loving it.

lol! I know I’ve been creeping your thread in the Dutch passion forum and seen you in many of the threads I’ve been following along in as well!

I once put my seedlings on my window sill after they broke the soil and they were okay. But, when I put them under my LED, they grew an inch in 12 hours. So, as soon as they break through, get them in your tent or whatever. It makes a huge difference.

Good luck chum.

Thanks for sharing eP. Good to know. I’ll do my best to get them in my tent and under light ASAP! Going to assemble my tent and get my pots prepped later. Going to have to wait until tomorrow to plant them as the medium is way too cold right now

So, there’s some action- very subtle, very little going on but I figured I’d mention it. 2 of 3 have just barely broken the surface and the 3rd isn’t yet visible but there is a little hill formed where the seed was planted. I decided I’d throw them in the tent and hung one of my autocobs approximately 4 feet above the surface.

That was last night ( I cut and pasted that from my post in the Mephisto section- yeah I’m lazy!)
Now all three are above ground which brings me to my next question... All 3 have their helmets attached. How long or what is a reasonable amount of time to let nature do it’s thing and let them free themselves of their casings? I know many on here have found themselves needing to give Mother Nature a helping hand when faced with ones that just couldn’t break free. I’m just looking for input from those more experienced than myself on timeline to allow before interfering or if there’s anything else I should be doing to facilitate progress. Misting or watering or leaving them as is. Or if misting should I avoid actually wetting the sprouts, or do I use a dropper and try and wet the helmet? My thanks in advance for any and all input

Anyone??? Lol. So, one day later... none of them look like an upside down “U” anymore ! Actually I think that was the night before last. So all are growing upwards and erect. 2 are about 2in tall and third is 1.5 in. All three still have their helmets on but they are slowly progressing to push them off on their own. Again, I’m just looking for input as to what is a reasonable time frame to allow nature to take it’s course. Thanks in advance...
