A newbie--need feedback on this first grow!

Congrats on starting your 1st grow! It's now time to start learning how to read the plants so they czn answer your questions, and not people! Look closely at the pics you posted.. Zoom in on the leaves... You will see that many of them are starting to curl upwards and the outer tips are starting to burn/yellow.. That's a pretty hot soil/medium for seedlings.. Especially autos (which have zero recovery time to allow issues to be resolved). You'll want to watch those leaves carefully.. The curling and yellowing can get worse quickly and start to spread to other leaves.. Hopefully they are strong enough to grow out of it, but they are already showing signs of issues. Definitely shouldn't need to add nutes for a while!

For what I see...the color is off and they look kind of leggy (the stem is very skinny). The yellowing/discoloration this early is probably over-watering or the soil is too hot for them, they should be a nice green. The leggy stems are why I asked about the lights, they grow that way when they are reaching for light. Whether you're using LED, T5, HPS or something else and what wattage you're running them at would be more helpful to determine what height you should be above your plants.
The lights are Mars Hydro TS1000 LED. 15" above canopy. Set at 75%. At full they draw 160w. What height do you suggest? Watering is a tough thing to gauge. Someone else thought underwatered. I need help determining that! I agree I wish they were greener! Am I in veg or seedling still?

Thanks for any advice on lights and water!

Thanks! Unfortunately, my color blindness gives me no trust in evaluating color of leaves! I did see the curling and the green didn't seem green enough to me! However, the are in top soil on top of that Plagron Royal mix but I suppose the roots are now hitting the Plagron?? However, are these still considered seedlings? Some have said I'm in veg? What's your opinion? Thanks for the welcome and advice!

Your 1st post said that you are using the Royal mix with some lite mix on top.. Roots grow straight down until they can't anymore. Roots will probably never reach the top soil.. "Vegging" or "veg" is a photo period term. It's the stage where the plant is only making "vegetation", or leaves. With autos that's usually from day 1 to around day 30.. You can veg a photo period plant for months.. Autos are on an internal clock and will flower when mature enough.

--Raise/lower lights? Change intensity?

while i'm on my first grow as well,i think i dialed in my lights pretty well.
i was at 50% intensity the first 10 days at 18 inches.kept my distance between 18 and 20 inches so far
day 11 i increased intensity 1 notch.
day 14 increased another notch
topped her day 15
15.jpg

day 17 increased light another notch
day 20 increased another notch
day 23 increased another notch
day 24 increased again another notch
and again day 25 for 100%

day 28

not sure if this is the best way,but my plant showed me she was fine with it.
hope that helps

also check out vpd,i have been following that religiously
i was using that with my leaves showing 4 degrees cooler than air temp.
your humidity looks too low to me at this stage of life.
i was at 65-70% at 78 degrees for a vpd between .57 and .74 for veg

My Concern about the Yellow Leaves is Growing!
Guys--Things are getting worse. As a reminder: First grow ever: Very concerned about how yellow and droopy some of these leaves are this past week. Some details:

  • AUTO seeds (Northern Lights, Blue Dream and Gelato from Seedsman planted in final pots on January 5; Sprouted–Jan 8
  • Mars Hydro TS 1000 in 2.3 x 2.3 x 5.3 ft tent
  • Three fabric pots–2 gallon each. Sitting on plant stands to allow drainage.
  • Soil: Plagron RoyalMix with a layer of Platinium Lite Mix on top.
  • Light: Currently at 75% intensity, 24" above pots. ppdf about 600 (using Korona phone app to measure). 24/0 light cycle
  • Tap Water: ph to 6.0. No nutes. I water slowly 3/4 to 1 cup every two days. I am not testing soil ph.
  • Temp and rh: This past week 77F to 80F and 45% to 50% rh. I have been able to get the rh to 80 if I closed the vents and the exhaust fan.
  • Currently have both exhaust fan on top and small circulation fan on bottom on low.

They are yellow and droopy! How do I fix this? I appreciate your advice for THIS grow. AND THE LEAVES LOOK A LOT WORSE IN PERSON THAN THESE PHOTOS. Very yellow! Someone suggested the soil is too hot but I also read I shouldn't flush live soil (except before harvest).

Thanks!

Update--Got some improvement but still very small!
I'd love to get some feedback. Present status (and reminders of data previously posted):
First grow ever!
  • Day 44 since sprouted; Day 10 of flowering
  • Strains and predicated heights: Autoflower fem seeds from Seedsman. (I know the numbers are not guaranteed!) Northern Lights (31"-59"), Blue Dream (43") Gelato OG (23"-46").
  • Current height after LST a few weeks ago (February 21): Gelato and BD--5"; NL--3.5"
  • Mars Hydro TS 1000 in 2.3 x 2.3 x 5.3 ft tent
  • Three fabric pots–2 gallon each. Sitting on grates to allow drainage.
  • Soil: Plagron RoyalMix
  • Light: Currently at 100% intensity, 18" above pots. ppdf about 600 (using Korona phone app to measure). 18/6 light cycle
  • Water: ph to 6.0. Every 3 to 4 days
  • Nutes: Used epsom salts and milk (calmag) from Feb 1-17; Gave first feed with Playgron Bloom nutes til run-off on 2/18.
  • Temp and rh: 74 F to 80F and 45% to 60% rh.
  • Air: Currently have both exhaust fan on top and small circulation fan on bottom on low. Have two vents open.
See photos. (Compared to previous photos--definitely better but oh so small!)

I see trichomes. What do you see? What should I look for next? Any suggestions? Thanks, all!

Look into knf Korean natural farming. You can make your own amendments and reuse soil great for high quality and saving money. Fermented plant juice for veg fermented fruit juice for flower. I make ffj with bananas and brown sugar bud hardener because of potassium resin and flavor increaser. Try to do other crops too. If you grow fruits and vegetables you will increase your skills and have fresh free food. https://youtube.com/channel/UCMimlla-2Cllio1JEEop-Fg good YouTube channel.

he has multiple auto flower vids too congrats on your first grow hope this helps. Maybe look into bokashi and worm bin.

Also they might stretch if they are more sativa but even if they are small it's all a learning experiencence and each grow will get better and remember generally less is more
