A couple of questions

I'm sorry if any of this has already been discussed, but I did search and couldn't find what I was after.

So my first question is what would happen if you forced a feminised plant to hermie and took the pollen and then seeded another feminised plant with that pollen? Would this just produce a genetic fuck up or a feminised hybrid of the two? Bit of a random question I know, but I'm really curious as to the result.

Secondly, how many plants would you need to be able to grow at one time for breeding to be remotely worth while. I would not be looking to make some new kind of super strain, but just have a nice combination of two strains that I like and work on refining my favoured traits from there by inbreeding.

Thanks in advance to any answers.

female x female is still female.

plant number depends if your lucky to hit the traits you need with a small number of plants

I believe if you forced a female to "hermie" then the offspring seeds would have the hermie trait.

You may be better off looking into the colloidal silver route

The colloidal silver route is what I meant. They spray colloidal silver on females to force/induce hermaphrodites right? Sorry if my terminology is a bit off.

So it perhaps wouldn't be a bad idea then if I wanted to breed a fem'd strain without going through all the trouble myself. What you say about plant number makes perfect sense and I suppose it's kind of a pointless question. I guess I just wanted to know if anyone else does this.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think some breeders just breed with fems now for greater control but i have no idea if there's long term issues

Interesting, I would have thought it would cause problems somewhere down the line but who knows? But I'm sure for my purposes it would be fine in that case.

Just so you know, a good breeder of fem seeds has most likely bred out the majority of the hermie trait maiking it very difficult to force male flowers, even using CS. That being said, the female pollen is usually added to a seperate feminized plant to lessen genetic drift, so I wouldn't recommend self pollenation for breeding. If you are new to breeding - buy a nice mix pack and play with the females. See which strains you like best, then start with the CS on the heathiest plant you have to get some pollen. Then apply that to a plant that has another valuable trait...like early flowering, etc. And let the games begin!

Your second questions is really unanswerable. Idealy, the more selection you have the quicker you can capture quality traits and cross. You can do it with a few few dozen or a few hundred, but the reality is, all it takes is 2 plants. The fewer plants you have the longer it will take. The more you have...the faster. There is no magic # per se' but 10+ would help jumpstart the identification of the individual phenos.

Most 'worked' strains have pulled out specfic traits and isolated a specific pheno, so choose what you want to start with carefully. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your reply mate and just for the record I was not planning on self pollinating a hermaphrodite female but using that pollen on a female of another strain, like you say.

Interesting to know that about fem'd plants potentially being harder to turn hermie.

I realise that my second question was kind of pointless lol, don't really know why I asked to be honest. I would only be able to have 4-5 at a time but I might just take your advice and get a mixpack and cross the ones I like the look of, but before I do anything like that I need to figure out what I actually want first so I will wait till I have more grows and experience under my belt anyway.

Cheers Buddy

Not all....just some...as in the really good breeders who work hard to protect their genetics - possibly a little too hard. Where I was going with that is - don't be frustrated if you're using some top name breeders fem seeds and can't get them to sprout balls! I'd personally start with some non-fem seeds, grow a female that sexes early and hit her with CS - and start from there. And your second question was not pointless- if you can squeeze a sixth plant in there - you could get some good crosses in a few grows/generations. The hardest part is deciding which plant to apply the CS to and which plant to pollenate.

The most important key point is to have fun doing it and knowing your playing a larger role in making your own meds/herb!
