6 on 2 off light cycle

I've seen a big discussion on 24/0 vs 20/0 but I have recently come across the concept of a 6 on 2 off cycle and I thought that could be interesting for auto flowers. Has anyone tried that on these boards?

Personally, I fail to see any advantage as you'll lower the lifetime of your lights due to the constant switching on and of, plus any plant needs a certain amount of time to get photosynthesis, etc, going properly. Start swapping light/dark too often and the plant might not get the chance to optimise things, leading to, at best, lower yields and, at worst, total confusion and no yield.

Your plan is basically splitting an 18/6 cycle in three so will likely cost more in the long term thanks to reduced lifetime of your light plus the extra costs in "surges" every time things get turned on. I wouldn't recommend it, personally.

With LEDs I wouldn't think the switch would be a problem but probably put more stress on an HPS which needs to come up to temperature. The reasoning behind it was that it would reduce stress on the plant. I notice that a lot of people tended to say on the 24/0 thread, said that they didn't really notice much if any difference in 18/6 or 24/0 which would make sense if they have a limit on how much light can be processed at a time.

I may possibly look into testing this myself at some time in the future, but not if it's already been done. I've done a search but could not find anything.

There is someone on here that is trying it. I can't remember who though. I think it was an Autoseeds grower.

OK thanks, I'll see if I can do a more thorough search.

You're still surging through the driver, then surging through the LEDs themselves. I know from experience that the lifetime is reduced thanks to working for a company wot makes all sorts of lights, the lifetime gets reduced considerably with constant switching.

Fair enough.

Hey man, try searching Gas Lantern Routine, there is some threads about it here and many other places

I can't hate cause I've never tried it, but it does sound kinda wacky. 20/4 all the way for me.

if nature is illegal, freedom doesnt exist..

I've been doing 6/2 on my very first grow for three weeks now and the plants all look fine. never thought of the wear on my electronics so I just switched over to the 20/4. thanks to mr. banjacked
