Ive read about trimming to, no larger than golf ball to avoid mold. Done correctly, there are no woriies.
The key is large, THICK paper bags. Once trimmed, put, what would dry to be an oz., in each bag (roughly 1/4 lb. wet) There should be one layer, filling bottom of the bag.
I fold the tops a few times, then hang with close pins.
Depending on your RH in drying area is when I check them. In the summer, rh is high and I leave for 3 days, undisturbed...winter, low and I leave undisturbed for 2 days.
After 2 to 3 days, buds have shrunk considerably and you can see a decent amount of the bottom of bag. This is when I combine bags. Usually 2 bags will be consolidated to 1. Again, an even layer.
I like to jar early...around 70-75ish%
From my dry/cure research I've learned once youve hit below 55% rh, you've lost the cure. So...in theory, if the outside of the bud is crispy dry, that part missed the cure. Jarring early, to redistribute moisture from the stems to the outside of the bud, ensures 100% cured bud.
It takes some juggling from there. I will jar for a night, then bag again for the day. Timeframes all depend on how fast it's drying. It takes me 7- 10 days, until I'm ready to keep in the jars for burbing...which I do 3x a day, about 30 min. each, for a week. Then 2x a day 1x a day etc...The dryer it gets the less I burp and less time left open while burping, until I've hit the desired 62%. Then I let it cure, burping once a week.
