SeedBank: Dinafem
Strain: White Widow Auto

Description of strain from Dinafem:

"White Widow autoflowering is the cross of our best male Critical+ Autoflowering with the original White Widow clone.

We managed to reflect the bitter-sweet taste, as well as the lots of resin and the floral appearance of the original White Widow mother in this autoflowering. The only remarkable difference is the higher CBD content, which leads to a more physical buzz than in the regular White Widow strain.

The leaves are broad, dark green and covered with resin. When you barely touch the leaves, it releases a deliciously captivating aroma. Buds are large, thick, hard, compact, with few leaves and loaded with resin.

The sexual stability of the plants is extremely important, to avoid hermaphroditism, so we discarded the male and female plants that were not pure. After two years of work, selecting only the best plants among thousands of seeds in each generation, we are now sure that this new line is stable, uniform and of greatest quality.

Info from Dinafem (predicted performance):
YIELD: 40 to 160 gr

HIGHT: 50 to 110 cm

SPEED OF FLOWERING: 75 days"

Did it autoflower?: Yes. 24 hour light postponed appearance of preflowers to over 30 days, and serious flowering didn't occur until a couple of weeks after that.

Soil/hydro: Hydro Deep Water Culture, individual 5 gallon bucket with airstone, 6 inch netpot lid and hydroton foundation. Started in rockwool cube right in the bucket.

Nutes: General Hydroponics 3-part flora series and GH cal-mag in well water which had 100 ppm TDS to begin with. No other additives or boosters. Started feeding trace amounts from day 1, gradually building to a max of around 1200 ppm (Hannah meter) during heaviest bloom. Weekly to 10 day reservoir (bucket) changes. Daily top-offs were regular nutrient mix. At all times feeding strength roughly corresponded to 1/4 to 1/2 strength of the GH recommendations, and I adjusted the strength by monitoring the ppm readings daily and finding the strength that would keep them constant from day to day. Veg period was maximized by delaying the introduction of bloom nutes until plantwas done stretching. Suspended feeding and flushed with plain pH'd well water for 2 weeks before harvest.

Light (kind and schedule): single 400 watt HPS overhead and (3) 26 watt household CFL's in the darker spots. Lights ran 24 hours a day start to finish. Plant shared a 4ftx4ftx6ft box with 3 plants of another strain. (and out-produced those 3 combined!)

From seed to harvest date: 120 days- harvested tops of plants 140 days- harvested remaining lower buds. Clear and cloudy mix of trichomes with just a few ambers.

Dry Yield: 14 ounces (396 g) manicured buds, several oz. of very good trim

High/Effect Duration: Buds not fully cured yet, I'll post an edit to this report in a few weeks when they're somewhat cured.....so far though it seems like good smoke....nice equal parts of head and body effects....

RATE SCALE: * bad to ***** good

BAG APPEAL: **** 4 out of 5 stars

Nicely frosted buds with a good ratio of calyxes to leaves. Not super-dense grown under 24 hour light, but they break up beautifully without a grinder. Buds cure to a medium dull green with orange/ light brown pistils.

THE GROWTH: ****** 6 out of 5 stars (!!!) not kidding friends!

The Widow was problem free during the grow except for needing some extra cal mag at about 3 weeks. It grew much larger than predicted by the breeder since it was in DWC and had 24 hour lighting. Actual height was around 1.5 meter vs the 1.1 meter maximum predicted. Growth pattern was initially typical indica with plenty of side branching right from the beginning. The plant stretched a good bit after entering the preflower stage setting the stage for some nice long colas. The extended veg and 24 hour lights allowed it to develop 16 to 18 side colas on a five foot tall plant.

THE SMELL: **** 4 out of 5 stars

Hard to describe smells, but I'd call this one spicy with a hint of ripe cantaloupe, maybe a slight trace of piney smell too. The smell is getting richer and better as it cures...I'll update these comments after a bit more curing....

THE SMOKE: **** 4 out of 5 stars

Not fully cured yet but showing potential already...seems like it will be smooth...Again, I'll update after more curing..

THE HIGH: *** 3 out of 5 stars

Really Good! Nice head high and mellowing effect without inducing a coma! Balanced head and body effects...But with some of the super strains out there now and taking into account the power of some photo strains, I'd have to give it a 3. Still, better than any commercial I've seen lately and much better tasting and smelling. I suspect that potency might have been increased at the expense of some yield if I had switched to a light and dark cycle at about halfway through heavy flowering and continued that way until finished. That's what I'll do next time and see what happens.

Comments: Easy to grow problem-free strain and a huge producer under the right conditions. Large plant which could overgrow smaller plants in your grow space. Plants smell a bit during the first few weeks and then again towards the end. Odor control measures should be considered if growing this strain and stealth is required. Predicted 75 day flowering period is probably achievable with a sufficient dark cycle, however with 24 hour lights mine went 120 days to first chop (top colas) and another 20 or so days after that till harvest of the lower buds.

All in all, I'm very happy with the results of this grow. It was my first indoor grow and first attempt at hydro. A big tip of the hat and thanks to attitude for the freebie seed! :tiphat:

Edited to add photo:

seeds.jpg

Seeds from this run....CS treated some rooted clones from same plant to obtain pollen...long growth and flowering period allowed seeds to mature....I squeezed each one and discarded the hollow ones, most of these should grow resulting in female plants

Just a quick update on the smoke report......It's been in jars for about six weeks now, and the flavor and potency have both started to really come into their own....I understand why the flavor might change as it cures, but I'm not sure why the potency would actually increase also...however, there's no doubt it has....it is immediate, long-lasting and a nice buzz with equal parts head and body effects...It's hard to verbally describe flavors but I can say that the cured product is very pleasant tasting with no harshness and no tendency to "expand" in the chest and make you choke. Very, very smooth.....
Friends who have sampled the results of this grow have universally given them high marks.....The quality and quantity of this run as well as the fact that I ended up with some viable seeds means that I'll be growing this strain again at some point.....
