I will be using a grow tent that is 4X4X8 and i want to use a 1000 watt MH to grow all of auto flowering strains in. I know that a good light schedule is 20/4 throughout th entire grow. I want to stagger their grows so I can always have some medicine. My question is: is a 1000 watt MH overkill? I have read both good and bad on this subject and just want to make sure I am doing the right thing the right way. I was even thinking of a dimmable ballast and using only 850 watts instead of the full 1000. Lunitex makes a good bulb that will still put out a full spectrum even at 850 watts. Any help or guidance here would be much appricated.

Do you have the ability to actively cool your tent? I mean seriously cool it? If so, 1000W will serve you well. I have a 4x4x7 and run a 600W. I have a cooled enclosed hood and still have to use a 12k BTU portable AC in my tent to keep the temps down. Now, mine is in the garage and it averages about 90F throughout the Summer here but even when it is cool I still have a hard time keeping my temps down without AC. During the winter with temps about 50F I don't have to heat the tent because the bulb is hot enough to keep it warm. That would be my only warning. If you can keep the temps down I would definitely run 1000W. You will notice the difference, especially if you run photos or larger strains of Autos. 3' or taller.
