Here's another little story about my local, friendly Farm and Feed Store…
I've been planning on getting some wormies, but 1 lb. of worms eats 3.5 lbs of stuff a week, and as I'm single, to be honest, I don't make 3.5 lbs of vegetable and fruit waste every 7 days. So with starry eyed expectations, I marched into my local grocery store and asked the guy in the produce department for some of their waste trim off the veggies. The guy said, "I'd love to, but it's company policy that we can't give away anything like that anymore. We used to. But not anymore."
Bummer, huh?
Well, my next stop was the Farm and Feed Store, and guess what? They had 5 gallon bags (about 32 lbs) of Organic certified worm castings for freaking $9.99 a bag! That's $2 a gallon for worm castings! Their price was less than half of what I'd seen them for elsewhere! Man oh man, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! They're decent castings too. Really people, check out your local farm and feed store! They've got great prices! :smoking:
So in spite of the fact that I've got my 10 gallon Rubbermaid tubbie all fixed up for worms and I've shredded mountains of paper and cardboard for their bedding, as long as I can get castings that cheap, I'm gonna hold off getting the worms until I figure out a way to keep them well fed on a budget.
BUT, when I do get my worms, I'll buy them from Uncle Jims Worm Farm, 'cuz he's got the best prices on the Internet. I've seen outfits selling 1 lb of worms for as much as $38, but Uncle Jim sells his for just $19.99 a lb. He's been in business a long time, and I haven't seen any gripes on him.
