MaraCachafa grows Jean-O's Genetics

On Thursday I soaked 3 each of Jean-O’s new strains, MJ-12 and Way 2 Good.. The next day I poured them onto a paper towel and kept them covered in my office, which stays pretty warm. Today I planted the 3 MJ-12 in Solo cups of coco coir soaked in 1.5 g/GL of MegaCrop and 1 T./GL of Southern Ag “Garden Friendly Fungicide.” The three “Way 2 Good” seeds haven’t busted out yet. They’re still in moist paper towels in the office at 77°F.

The Way 2 Good seeds are very fresh, I believe like 5 weeks from harvest today. I may have sent them out too soon possibly. They are a bit tougher to germinate when they are fresh.

The W2G beans still haven’t cracked open a week in. I’ll keep trying.

Have you tried to freeze them over night? I think i got over excited and sent them out too early and they are just too early for germination. Freezing them with some moisture will help the water penetrate the tough shell. Possibly skuff the outer shell with sand paper to help the water penetrate.

@WildBill

I got to sample the Crazian ( crazy X x Asian Haze) super tasty bud. Excellent job on that pairing.

You mean excellent job on that screw up?

jointman dat’s why dey call eet ah happy accident, mon!
Mine was so Crazy Kush dominant, I gotta wonder if she was a low % parent dominant pheno… it would figure, with my freak pheno’ magnet luck

Y’all gotta grow her again, she checked all the boxes for me! A great OD performer…

I love her high, nice balance… it’s here that I find Asian Haze’s influence most :+1:

Ever get those W2G to pop?

I froze them in the wet paper towel in a plastic bag. I took them out of the freezer last night. It looks like one is cracked a little, but can’t see a root yet. I tried to germinate some hops seeds a few years ago, and the instructions said to freeze them for a month before germination. Supposedly some plants are programmed not to germinate until after winter comes and goes. Maybe Ruderalis works like that since it comes from a cold climate?

If these don’t sprout in a couple of days I’ll start some more.

I have heard that technique used for getting older or harder shelled seeds to crack, over wintering or something like that. I hope it works out. Maybe just give the seeds some time, JeanO did say they were pretty fresh.

Sometime this year I will grow another Crazy Asian in my 3x3 tent in a 25 gal pot.
Just in case a Unicorn pops up, I do think I’m gonna keep a clone of each one that I pop until the smoke report.

Cold stratification. The seed got cold and when it’s warm again, it “knows” that winter is over and it’s time to grow.

In reality, some seed coats get softened by cold temperatures and moisture if they are hard.

One MJ-12 survived and was transplanted to a 3 gallon pot of coco on day 9, now on day 11.

I planted 2 tails each of MJ-12 and KFxOHxW2G in Solo cups. I froze a couple more Way 2 Good seeds and there are now 5 W2G beans in paper towels waiting to bust out. Slowpokes I guess. I think the sprouts that didn’t make it didn’t like the 30% humidity. I’m keeping this batch humid.

 The seed maturation thing, post harvest, from what I learned from other breeders, they do need several weeks or so to fully get set metabolically for germination, and to dry/harden out completely…

One guy I know of (produces ridiculous amount of seeds BTW, for himself and mates) lets his seeds sit at cool-side of room temps and middle range RH%, in the dark for several weeks before getting final cold storage (not in the freezer, cold fridge T’s are plenty good for this)…

Some processes can’t be rushed, and flash-freezing isn’t the answer…

Hard cases can be a pain for sure, sometimes hard to tell if it’s that or some other germ’ snafu… Myself, I don’t just scuff the surface up, I hit the seams and the point with sandpaper. Works a treat on big beans with really hard cases, older seeds too (or at least eliminated that as a cause for shit germ’ing).

Shell cracking is mostly just water uptake swell, next step is if the radical gets fired off properly. We’ve all seem seeds crack and stall, just sit there until they start to rot… Or show painfully slow activity… Keep in mind from the plant’s perspective, seeds are a shotgun blast at carrying on the next generation. It’s a numbers gambit, right? Some will be good, others shaky, some are duds no matter what. With well grown happy mothers, it’s just upping the odds for more, better seeds and viability!

Mother Nature also plays some interesting tricks, by design… some seeds are ready poppers, others tougher hold-outs, a hedge against sudden wipe-outs by whatever cause…survival traits that don’t keep all the proverbial eggs in one carton :grimacing:

 … was it here or elsewhere I saw some seeded OD plants left to rot away over Winter, come Spring, start to have their seeds germinate nicely(!) right in the rotted buds..? It was a trip! …moldy shit looking condition tops with wild shoots of radicals popping out all over :joy: for peeps struggling with germ’ issues, this sorta thing can really piss one off!

The surviving MJ-12 is on day 17, ready to top in the next day or 2. I just transplanted the KFxOHxW2G today, her day 3. Still trying to get the W2G to pop.

MJ-12 is on day 21. She was topped on day 18 (maybe FIM). Now the branches are trying to get past the big fat fan leaves to reach the light. I’m torn about whether to lop off the 4 biggest fans, or wait for the branches to bust out. The big fans must be producing a lot of energy, so I guess I’ll wait a couple of days. The KFxOHxW2G is 7 days old, chugging along. There are 5 Way 2 Good seeds still in paper towels since forever, but haven’t busted open.

Can you tuck those big fans out of the way so the branches can get through. Tucking is better but removing leaves that are hindering growth is usually a net positive in the long game.

That’s so interesting mine sprouted great but I had problems with MJ-12 popping took 3 tries

MC mate, those W2G seeds are wonked, toss’m! I’m shocked they haven’t rotted out…

Are they in soil?

No soil, they’re still in paper towels. I’m surprised they didn’t rot too. It made me think there’s something alive in there with a functioning immune system.
