Bob's Journey into Hybridisation and Genetics - For Dummies

Hey guys :toke:

Everything is going smoothly inside the tent, but that's old news right? 👌
Every day I divide 2.5L water, with Orgatrex and Bio PK 5-8 added to it, between the nine ladies inside the tent.
View attachment 1643512

I've also added another one hour shift for the UV light. Now the lights come on every eight hours for one hour at a time. I feel the ladies are responding very well to this treatment. And I've not seen any issues arising from this treatment.
View attachment 1643513

Also cleaned up the lowest branches from each plant. The budsite weren't going to amount to anything and the energy is better spent somewhere else.
View attachment 1643514

Yup, I'm satisfied with this cross. Just have to be patient for a couple of more weeks until I can chop them down.
View attachment 1643515

In the meantime I've started to collect White Widow from several other sources as well. When reading about the history I found out that the Fem seeds from Greenhouse aren't probably the real deal. Since Franco past away (RIP), the company never seemed to have released any new cultivars and is focussing it's buisiness to feminizing their stock. Reading further about the history, the chances that Mr.Nice Seeds, The Sjaman and Dutch Passion are the only ones in posession of the real parent's, or at least clones from the original stock is higher then the other way around...So I'm laying my eggs in three baskets. At least I hope so*. Three versions... A blind test, unbiased...I will set something up where I can't/won't know which is which.
In the end I'm searching for that one I like and that's a personal hunt...using scent, vision and touch to select what I finally want on my plate.
View attachment 1643516

*Tonight I came upon an auction for a White Widow reg at Mr.Nice Seeds which I'm hoping for I will win. 🤞
With a bit of luck I can get my hands on that 15-pack of seeds, together with the reg seeds from Ingemar (The Sjaman) and the Dutch Passion Regular seeds, which Antonio is fixing me up, God bless his heart 👩‍❤️‍👩, I must be able to get myself some nice pheno's to hunt through, even though I don't have a lot of space inside my tent, I'm still gonna go for gold. 🥇
View attachment 1643517

The idea is to start the seeds around November 15th in solocups filled with sterile seedling mix. So when today's ladies are harvested I can immediately fill up the tent with a new batch of youngling's.
View attachment 1643518

This will be my first Photo run you guys, so I'm already begging those with the knowledge to help me out as this kind of growing will probably give me all kinds of headaches in the beginning... ie, I've never grown with lights out, so don't know what to do and what to expect VPD (temp/humid) wise...
View attachment 1643519

Ok, now back to this grow...Lights out for those extra special pictures...Kinda burlesque no?
View attachment 1643520

This is what we are after guys...Nice plants, that flower quickly and are full of trichomes...And still a couple of weeks to go...I would guess...Three weeks...
View attachment 1643521

Ok, one more before I show you the time lapse.
View attachment 1643522

Bear in mind that this new camera only takes pictures every one minute against the old one, which could wait 5 minutes before shooting the next... So I've upped the speed to 120fps and the duration = 53 hours. On the plus side...The resolution went from 4000x3000 to 5120x3840 pixels, which should help with the resolution and quality of the images.
So without further ado here you go guys, enjoy :thanks:
Sorry guys, no time lapse today...After four hours of compiling I got a clip which hangs...Not for today anymore. Gonna rest a bit and set an alarm.
Already won a Dreamtime 15-pack for 17€, so wish me luck with White Widow 🤞

Bob :toke:
So from your post here, you have been running your girls at 24/0?
Yeah, your humidity will go up when the lights are off. It's not gonna really matter all that much while you're vegging naturally, but we're only talking like 3 or 4 weeks.
My lung room is what I maintain to have the proper environment in my tent. I fine tune the environment in my tents by the Exhaust fan. You're really only going to worry about your humidity with lights off late in flower.
Naturally, late in flower you're gonna have the lung room humidity lowered. Yes stuff can happen where the humidity goes up, like watering just before lights off, or the girls just decide if they're gonna put out a lot of humidity. It happens! Since getting the new AC Infinity exhaust fans, I have a humidity threshold set and if it hits that humidity, the fan goes to a higher speed.
If you're using your lung room as the main controlling Factor of the environment, you're really not gonna have to worry about it that much. The fan does offer a nice safeguard!
If you're worried about mold starting here's a nice little link that helps you determine the likelihood of mold occurring

With your Growing experience, I highly doubt you're gonna have any kind of problems at all transitioning to growing photos.

I've got three different light schedules currently going in my grow room! :face: :haha:
4x4 tent is on 18/6 With being on from 11 to 5PM ......Autos
2.3x2.3 tent is on 18/6 With being on from 5PM to 11PM ......Autos
2x4 tent is on 5PM to 5AM Photos
Those odd times are because of the change in time!

So from your post here, you have been running your girls at 24/0?
Yeah, for Auto's I find there's no difference running the lights 18/6 or 24/7. The advantage is that I can keep my variables very stable, which the plants love.
When going to Photo's I'll have to contend with humidity and since my lungroom isn't much bigger then my tent, I'm afraid I'm gonna run into trouble as soon as it starts to rain. I've been reading about making a DIY dehumidifier which is installed inline with the intake of the tent. We'll see if we need to go that route...

I fine tune the environment in my tents by the Exhaust fan.
Mine is so overpowered for my tent I rarely need to run it higher then 50%. I'm currently three, maybe four weeks from harvesting and the fan is running at 16%...More then enough to keep the humidity (actually the VPD = high) very low.

Yes stuff can happen where the humidity goes up, like watering just before lights off
Writing this one down. Watering just before or after lights on. :toke:

Since getting the new AC Infinity exhaust fans, I have a humidity threshold set and if it hits that humidity, the fan goes to a higher speed.
Don't wanna brag, but I can do this also with my Blynk app :hump: Just need to program it in :haha:

If you're worried about mold starting here's a nice little link that helps you determine the likelihood of mold occurring
Bookmarked the link. Already have a dewpoint calculation running in my Blynk app, but not the likelyhood of mold, might learn which parameters the website uses to calculate that value... Thank you again :d5:

With your Growing experience, I highly doubt you're gonna have any kind of problems at all transitioning to growing photos.
Trust me, I can really f#(k things up guuuud if need be...

2x4 tent is on 5PM to 5AM Photos
Which means this tent is flower. Guuud luck with that one and let there be a bountyfull harvest 🤞

Day 53 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
Hey Friends,

Another day another quick update.
Some girls are starting to look the look...

I'm guestimating that these faster ladies still need two to three weeks...Looking at the trichomes...

Day 54 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
Hey Guys :toke:

Figured out what was wrong with the old camera. The exploded battery broke the sd card and the outside cover, but after replacing the card and battery it booted right up... So without further ado...Speed = 30fps, duration = 56 hours. Enjoy :thanks:

Day 57 - Junk Dealer's Wedding
Hey Guys :toke:

Not much to to say about this grow as everything is slowly coming to an end...I've stopped giving nutrients for a while as I feel there's still more then enough in the soil. We'll see in a couple of waterings if I will be adding some Bio PK 5-8
1699571744007 _small.jpg

Oh, I also upped the amount of UV light to four times a day, each time the light runs for one hour. I feel the plants do respond more heavily on this lightspectrum by producing more trichomes, but then again, I'm biased...
1699571744001 _small.jpg

Ok, not the parts you guys are interested in...
1699571743997 _small.jpg

One of the slowest girls...To each there own :smokeit:
1699571743991 _small.jpg

And the very slowest of them all...

1699571743967 _small.jpg

To sauce things up here's another time lapse. Speed = 60fps, duration = 67 hours.
As you can see, the plants are concerned with only one thing...Epansion :hump:

Hey friends :toke:

Small update and no pictures today as my time is spent on other projects momentarily, for which I apologize as my interaction with AFN has solely been through this thread lately. I'm sorry for not following along on your guys/galz' journey and this will remain so for an unforeseen time :shrug:It is what it is, but I do hope you keep visiting 🤞

Checked the ladies yesterday and they are still finishing up, drinking only water and slowly expanding more and more. I've turned the lights down by 20%, so we're running at 80%. The UV light runs four times a day for one hour. And VPD is being kept between 1.3 and 1.4kPa to keep mold from entering those beautiful buds...

Then why am I so busy?..Well actually I was jumping to get onto the White Widow breeding project, but unforeseen circumstances prohibited that. ie, not all seeds have arrived. But this is actually a blessing in disguise as now I can run the originally planned Sawney/Mephisto/Dinafem breeding run...
From the seeds that didn't arrive those Mr.Nice's seeds were among them. Speaking of...These guys also have a small forum on their website, not as active as this beauty, but still packed with breeding information going back to the beginning of this century!! Old timers like Scott Blakey and (rip) Neville Schoenmakers have left us with a sh!tload of info...That's where I've been of lately...reading up and learning a lot about crossing auto with photo genetics and what happens when you get seeds from these F1's...boy-o-boy do I have my work cut out for me...This is going to be a project set over several years. And better to be prepared the right way from the get-go, then getting stuck in the middle and having to start all over again.

So, while we wait for everything to arrive I'm going to start with the project that originally came next, before I got swiped in all the White Widow storm. I'm going to start with the following cultivars...
  • 4x Double Grape x 3 Bears OG ♀
  • 9x Slaughtered Lam ♀
  • 9x Skywalker OG x UK Cheese ♀
  • 5x Cheese XXL S2 ♀
  • 9x (Double Grape x Toof Decay) x Sooty Bride ♂ + ♀

I'm hoping to keep three specimens from each cultivar and one male (Double Grape x Toof Decay) x Sooty Bride to pollinate the best of each three said females. For this I'm going to use my foldaway cardboard makeshift tent. I found a place where it fits perfectly and with the cob lighting inside cold temperatures won't be an issue, I hope 🤞
I'll let nature run it's course...with the help of a small fan and after the pollination they can go back inside the tent minus the male of course.

I'm also hard at work inside the greenhouse preparing everything for winter come...
The plants that can't bare not frost are already on top of the heated table, which is surrounded by an extra layer of plastic, creating a greenhouse inside a greenhouse. The heating element is set to 9°C / 48°F and I've left enough opening on the bottom for air exchange and water droplets to fall of on the ground and not on the table.
I've also dismantled the watering system and took all the controllers inside for a check up and to repair/replace one solenoid. And if I find the time, even replace the MCU's themselves so I can run Blynk on them and get them all in one app, instead of using Tuya for the watering schedule, which has worked flawlessly I must admit, but the foresight of having all these devices in one app is so alluring for a techie like me...
Almost all the pots have been de-rooted and the contents added to one of the large containers I have with the left over soil. When I'm finished removing all plant matter, I'll be laying a tarp on the floor and dump all the soil onto one mount.
I've got about 10kg's of fresh horse manure coming over in the next couple of days, which will be mixed in and can break down over winter.
Gonna get me another sh!tload of fishing worms and hope the worms in the larger fabric pots survived the hot temperatures in the greenhouse or order some compost worms as well.
I'm also adding about 60L of VIANO MIXPROF, which is a soil enhancer. 60+L Coco coir which has been soaked and buffered with Cal/Mag and about 300L soil. And to top things off about 1kg of Calcium in the form of crushed seashells, 5kg Dolomite and 5kg Insect frass will be added. About 1kg of diatomaceous earth will also be added for it's mineral and Silicon count.
Finally I'm adding 20L biochar which has been brewing ever since the summer. I crushed the charcoal by double bagging it and driving over it with the car a couple of times. This gave me a nice mix of fine and crude pieces of carbon. The carbon itself is activated with urine to get as much ammonia and proteins inside it's cavities for the bennies to feed on and colonize over winter. This will be a part of the Terra Preta principle I want to introduce into my soil.

The amount of soil I now have is staggering and with the above added to it, it should amount to approx. 1.2m³ or 1200L of soil!! Every year this will eventually grow as amendments and soil are gonna be added to it. The base that I made with all the Biotabs grows has giving me such a great soil life to work with. Still so sad I lost my sponsoring, but I can only be grateful for the learning opportunity and maybe more important the soil life, as without these guys my grows wouldn't be what they are today. Thank you Karel, if you are reading along :pass:

Anyway,

I'm off to the greenhouse again to try and finish up cleaning the damn thing before days end...

Regards,

Bob :toke:

You got another job cut out for you mate! Keeping busy as always
That's the thing with a passion/hobby, or should I say a passionate hobby, it never stops haha.

Sad to hear about the beans, I've been sick for a week after the fair in Prague but I can send you the White Widow beans I promised tomorrow.
I'll send you a PM later. Good luck with the new project, lots to do! :d5:

Hey @Bob's Auto's .................. My fellow organic nut! :d5::pass:
I do Love how deeply you're delving into the organic world! It reminds me of how I was with my large garden at my farm!

If it's not included in the Biotabs, the only real thing I see that you might need to delve into adding is humic and fulvic acid. Yeah, you're gonna form some while composting, but it does take quite a long time for it to form in any substantial amount to be beneficial. I did a study well over 20 years ago with one of the few organic orientated Texas A & M Professors back then. With his direction, I sourced all the materials and combined accounts them and composted them with an extremely detailed log. He analyzed my results. Naturally, this was a thermactic composting setup and I took samples at various time frames. At one year time frame, there were finally amounts of humic and fulvic acid that the Aggie Professor said were at beneficial levels.

I haven't delved into this in growing cannabis for several reasons. I don't have the resources anymore to build a compost pile large enough to make it very viable. Ya kinda have to be careful in what you outsource for a finished product. The quality of the product varies in extremely large range! When I bought my current home, with the absolutely crappy soil here, I looked into getting a quality product to help shorten the process of turning my crappy soil into reasonably decent soil. I found companies that produced from questionable sources and procedures. The process can definitely concentrate undesirables! Stuff that you wouldn't wanna use in vegetables or cannabis. Not only that, it's extremely expensive. The best is derived from leonardite, but that also varies in quality and undesirables. A dry product is always better than a liquid, for shipping and actual content.

Jeremy of BAS strives to provide products that are quality products that are sustainable and with the absolute minimal concentrations of undesirables. They have one single source product that looks like it will be viable, but it's extremely expensive at $300 for 50 lbs. Now, that 50 lbs will last an extremely long time with a home grower! If they had it in smaller quantity I'd probably buy it and test it to see if it was viable.

I don't really think that your program really needs that addition. You do quite well with it as it is! I think I would only do it if I could get it in smaller quantities to run tests with. And now since building into the photo world, I can actually make viable comparisons with clones. I love autos, but photos can open up some more opportunities in several aspects.

Please keep documenting what you're doing. While currently I have extremely limited opportunities for breeding, at least proper breeding, Hopefully that may change next year if I can get my grow room built in my shop. I try to keep up with what you, ol' @Sawney_bean and others are doing here in the breeding aspect and learn a few things.

No problem with the beans buddy. I actually planned the Sawney and co. before the Widow run, so all things are guuuud  I just got blindsided by the Widow bud, lol.

First of all, thanks for the extended explanation. It's really appreciated bro :pass:
Have you checked out Bokashi? One of it's main advantages is that the amount of humic and fulvic is higher then any other organic way of producing them. You just reminded me about the system as it's something that was on my whish list. Just convinced the missus to order...tadaaa...

Yes, I have and I use it in my Earthboxes, directly. And yes, you are very correct in that that is one of the easiest and best method to produce it organically.

Ironically, the president of TeraGanix and I had a conversation about EM1 and its various usages. I was asking him about its utilization in making various ferments.
I had already been using bokashi in my earthboxes when he asked if I had used bokashi. When I told them how I used it he asked if I had tried a mini composter. I had looked at them for sure, but When I think of composting, I go back to my farm days and think large scale. So, I pretty much just blew it off. Kinda like I think about those kinda like I think about those tumbler style composters.
Well, the reality is that I'm not on the farm anymore! :funny: :funny: :funny:

You bringing this up at this time Is pretty timely! They have a sale! Now to be honest we I think it's pretty expensive at the sale price for some plastic, But that's the retarded times we're in!

Looks like I have something to order!
