Hello cool people.
I'm new here, so be gentle...

I'm a brand new grower, but after seemingly (to my wife at least.) hundreds of thousands of hours reading this site and the wider web, I've decided to go full living organic. At least I aim to try.

In reply to my introductory post here, Man O'Green suggested the Earthbox.

I've looked into it and seems like a good plan. LITFA seems like a good thing for a new grower and the Earthbox may keep the watering simple. I've loved reading of various adventures (Wild Bill et. al.) with Earthboxes. I've also seen criticisms of the Root and Veg box (Flimsy box, REALLY flimsy trellis, collapsing soil support screen above reservoir).

I have a 4x2x8 tent and I can't get two standard EBs in it. I can however get two Root and Vegs (with an extra Jr.) in the 4x2. I can also fit one Root and Veg, one standard and one Junior. Or 4 or 5 juniors... But that would be too many for my cannabis needs. I do want to grow enough for a year in one grow eventually (6oz>?) and use the boxes for lettuces, greens and possibly winter tomatoes.

I just bought a junior to look it over and it seems really shallow, but Wild Bill did great in it.

I'm curious if anyone has a feel for the relative benefits of the various sizes in regard to each other.

My tendency is to get a Root and Veg, strengthen the soil/rez barrier screen under-structure to prevent collapse (I'm not worried about the flimsy optional tomato trellis),
but BAS Jeremy said in a video that the Standard works better than the Root and Veg (too deep soil???).

As this is my first go at growing, I'm trying to make this as simple as I can.

Any feelings on the various sizes of EB for TLO use?
And any EB best growing practices would be appreciated too.

And please prepare for lots more questions for Team Organic...

first of all I would say just keep it simple I only use buildasoil craftblend and buildaflower (I’m adding a bit extras soon tho) plus the addition of worms. The soil I personally use has been coast of Maine stonington mix soil I just ordered my 3rd bag of it (since I keep adding new pots).

the size of the EB jr is perfect but it can grow some big plants, personally mine have stayed between 2 to 3ft. Watering is a bit tricky at first but once you start filling the reservoir you should be good.
I’m not that great at explaining shit cuz my mind goes all over the place :crying::jointman: but I know others will come and explain some more:goodluck::vibes::baked::smokeout:

i forgot to say I’ve only grown in the JR one tho so can’t help with the other sizes.

Nizmo! I've read your grows. SOOOO informative. I'm glad the Jr will work as I have just bought one. Great advice on the nutes/soil! We have a local company here who make soils. I may give one of their blends a try. Probably the most amended one... Too hot? Hollow out a place for just peat and castings for the seedling/sprout?

thank you I appreciate it:bow::pass::smoking: an if they’re locally to you I would definitely give them a chance and see how they do maybe a not so hot soil blend? And then that way you can top dress and let the magic of the earth boxes work which is the “double” root zones

I am trying BaS 3.0 for a couple of water only grows and found it to be pretty hot even cut with perlite 3-1. Don't know how that compares to your soil. Also, check out Wild Bill's (and others) "mound of compost" technique.

Great advice from both of you. One of the side benefits of the EB is that if it turns out I can't competently do this, I still have a planter for my deck....

Consider a cover crop too. In between grows. I'm thinking a bean/pea mix, harvest and then chop everything up as layer under the compost mound. Roots fix a lot of atmospheric N. Feed the worms.

What I'm getting is that you want to basically start a worm farm and then plant your cannabis in that.

It's a deep rabbit hole man!
:pass:

The deeper the better.
I like things that are simple to begin, but endlessly rewarding to further study.
