* Light Schedule. This seems to be reversed to cannabis? So I veg on 12/12 & when I want the pods to grow stick it back on 18/6 or so?
* What happens if I just leave it on my current 20/4?
* Processing. How to produce tar easily?
* Germination. Should I cover the seeds with a dome when germinating, or leave it open? My instructions do not mention a dome, but I have seen people use them. This is said to produce fungi etc & not to be done, but who knows?
* Light Power. The plants are in my grow tent, 250w HPS light. Is this ok? Too little, too much? I doubt too much, but indoor poppies are said to be a lot pickier.
I've never grown poppies indoors so I can't comment on the ideal lighting.
If you are growing these plants specifically for the medicine they offer or simply just to "get high", I would highly suggest making the pods into a tea instead of lancing the pods and collecting the latex/opium. The plants have WAAAAAY way more to offer if one makes a tea with their whole pods compared to just collecting the latex/opium from cutting them. If one is only lancing/collecting the latex/opium then they will need a somewhat large plot of plants to get anything worthwhile (I'd say 10X15 feet at the very minimum for not even much opium). It takes A LOT of plants to collect a usable amount of opium. I've grown somewhere around 50 to 75 plants outdoors the past several years, and even with those big outdoor plants (5 to 6 feet tall) with multiple pods each I still don't think I had enough to collect a decent/usable amount of opium.
I've grown poppies outdoors the past several years and I haven't bothered with cutting the pods for their latex/opium at all besides just a couple pods each year out of curiosity just to see how much latex they produce...Which brings me to another point. What strain/variety of poppy do you plan on growing? Some strains/varieties don't produce much latex at all. One variety I grew would only produce a tiny bead/drop of latex when cut, I would have needed about 100+ plants just to get a teeny tiny ball of opium.
Making tea with the pods is tremendously more efficient than cutting the pods for the latex/opium. The effects/high from tea lasts a long time too compared to "smoking" the opium. All around tea is just a much better way of using the plant.
Also...growing a bunch of poppies, indoors under lights of all places, with very obvious cut marks all over the pods makes it very apparent what one is growing the poppies for. Growing poppies with slices on their pods would have me sketched out. Since I use my plants for tea they never have cuts on their pods and therefor I'm not breaking any laws. As soon as one starts growing them indoors, and as soon as one starts cutting their pods and starts collecting the latex/opium, it is definitely considered growing/manufacturing drugs.
For sowing/germinating....I sow my seeds on the surface of the soil and just gently tamp/press them down a bit. Keeping the seed/soil moist at all times is important.
Good luck!......I've never heard of anyone growing poppies indoors. Seems like it would take a lot of light/energy for a relatively small amount of plants and I assume the plants will be relatively tiny....I'm definitely curious to see how it goes for you though!
The little I do know is that once they grow a main stalk they develop a bulb that becomes the flower. This is probably outdated hollywood BS but, I thought that then, before it turns into flowers, you take a razor and slit the side of the bulb. The sap that oozes out is the stuff you want. Let it dry on there or maybe cut the bulb off and then scrape the brown material and collect.
Not quite....
The seed pods is where the opium comes from, not the flower.
The flower has to bloom first, become pollinated, then it forms a seed pod. The seed pod is what people cut to collect the opium.
But making a tea from the pod is waaaay way more effective and much more efficient than cutting them and using the latex/opium.
I hear you mate, but don't panic yet. We are not doing anything that any normal gardener does not do. Poppies grow legally all over the UK in back gardens & the wild. I think the only issue would be in their preparation & we are a million miles away from that yet.
For the moment I am only growing some flowers in my tent. Think I would be in more trouble for my canna.
I dunno.
Having poppies growing around one's yard & garden for landscaping and ornamental and seed/culinary use is a much different circumstance than cultivating poppies indoors under lights with lance/cut marks all over the pods. I feel it would be tough to convince "the law" that you are growing them for landscaping or ornamental use only when they are growing in a tent or in a room under lights, and once there are cut marks on the pods you're screwed.
Even if one isn't cutting their pods, I would be waaay more sketched out and worried about growing poppies under some lights inside my house than I would be having poppies growing around the entire perimeter of my property.
I grow em' outdoors and I don't worry about it all, they just part of my landscaping/flower patches and they never have cut marks on their pods since I don't use them for collecting latex/opium (just tea).
