Well I'm thinking about this for light. http://www.357magled.com/Magnum-Plus2_p_16.html

I'm not sure if one would so it for me or not though, space isn't really an issue and I would like to grow at least 10 plants in maybe a 5X5 space. Is this reasonable for one light? If not $700-900 is my price range for lights and I want some lights that are energy efficient but still put out great results.

As far as the soil mix, I honestly have no clue. I want to start out in soil because I have heard it is more forgiving than Hydro.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Also, In you guys opinion are tents a good way to go or building one from scratch? Both are options to me, I just haven't really heard anyone with a definitive answer.

If your set on the light... It covers a 4x4 area.
Start from there.
Now determine how you want to grow( soil, soiless, hydro)
If your leaning towards soil, then you must figure out what size container you want to grow in.
Larger container larger plant (within limits). Or smaller container and more smaller plants. Each grower finds their own balance when it comes to this.
For a 4x4 area I personally would do 4 plants in 3-4 gallon pots.
Of course this will all depend on the strains you choose as well.
And most importantly, we're in Colorado. Insane deals to be had on craigslist.
There's more surplus growing equipment here than anywhere else. Search "grow" on craigslist. Insane amount of goods.
I scored a Quantum t5 badboy 12 lamp fixture nib never used $100cash. Retails around 400-600.
With the money I saved on that I was able to upgrade elsewhere.
I personally use PromixBx. This is a "soiless" medium. I like it because it's a blank canvas. No nutes. The only nutes my plants get is what I give them.
As well I use General Hydroponics General Organics for nutes and use Airpots for containers.
Hope my ramblings help.

To a newb like me this isn't rambling! I know just about everything there is to know about MJ except growing. I know about curing, genetics, Auto, Fem, BHO, Wax, indica/stativa, and edibles... But I feel like I have barely scratched the surface with all of the knowledge there is to learn on growing.

So, Where can you get all of the materials for the soil composition? And is Soil that has all of the nutes naturally in the soil preferred because of ease of use or is it makes for a preferred end product?

Some folks use premade bagged soil ( Fox Farm, Happy Frog) All can be had at local hydro shops.
And others make their own blend. There are alot of soil recipes out there. TLO etc..
I unfortunately am not the one to give advice on which works best. I'm a soiless grower.
But I can say definitely go with either an airpot or air pruning container.
Happy roots make a happy plant.
