DIY LED idea

I have a nice 400w CMH light and hood.
I want to move into LEDs.
So, here is my idea:

Mount 3 of these on this: http://www.heatsinkusa.com/3-500-wide-extruded-aluminum-heatsink/

(I might have to add some cooling fans for the heat sink.)

So I make one for each side of the light hood. I am adding 180w of LED power to my already very nice CMH lighting. The LEDs could almost be used by themselves in a small 4x4 tent.

But my idea has fundamental differences. I'm not gonna deal with individual LEDs and wiring them up in series/parallel. I glue the three modules onto the heatsink, wire them in series to the driver, and mount it on to the side of my hood. Do it again for the other side. Bam! I'm done.

Notice that each module has 8 Red 3-watt Cree LEDs each. I don't have to drill holes. Any "machining" at all would involve mounting a cheap PC fan on top of the heat sink.

Cost? Not really a factor. I would rather have the learning experience of DIY than buy something a little cheaper (if that is possible.)

Advanced stage:

Since leading LED lighting manufacturers are starting to modularize their plant light units, I could also build with that in mind.

Drilling and tapping the heatsink to accept screws that would mount the LED modules gives me the opportunity to upgrade in the future. I have three modules to replace rather than 30 individual LEDS.....

It will be after Xmas before I can actually start on this project. Pictures will come then.

Right now I'm throwing out a proof of concept idea.

J, I thank you for the reference. I had already studied his design. Believe me, I do a lot of studying on any project I undertake.
