Grow Mediums Watering coco question

Good discussion.

Couple of observations:

Fabric pots are best for run-off and oxygen.

Fabric allows for a never overwater fail safe. And can get good run off.

Coco when dry = wilted plant. Had one this grow. Found that a fan was directed at pot, so, she dried out asap. Once watered back up in no time.

Just some thoughts.

Cheers

I used normal plastic planting bags and simply modified them a bit(sure its much cheaper than fabric pots- i had to buy lots of them so i went for the cheaper option), seems to work great so far, apart from the few girls who couldnt keep up with the watering,- it was my mistake as i did not check their weight in the beginning , I simply gave them all the same amount each time(mistake), i do however trust that fabric pots should work better.. but i got them under control now, if you are unsure if you busy over- or under watering simply check the weight you will quickly figure it out(+read your girls like some1 mentioned above), i think coco is great once you figured out its tricks..

I thought coco was dummy proof?
Feed everyday.
Simple.
Am I incorrect?
Is it easy to overwater in coco?
I thought not, that's why I chose that particular medium.
Will the addition of perlite keep the chance of overwatering down?
Or cause too much airspace and premature wilting?
Thanks

llynboy-you will be fine. Coco does fit the medium requirement for canna better than soil indoors. The key is good--drainage. Coco holds up to 10x its weight. once reached water drains (unless to quickly feed). In fabric this will occur from bottom free flowing and if way too much will begin seeping along vertical sides of bags. My experience has been if grow room is on the cool side the plastic pots do not breath and have difficulty drying out.

If conditions are on the real cool side--I personally would add some perlite. In general, experts recommend just coco. Keeping pot size down to two gallon helps.

In fact, my cold coco stunters are recovering by the patio and thinking of moving under the lights once again.

here is how I start in coco I feed every watering for the first week I use 1/4 strength nutes and full strength root enhancer (rhizotonic) I feed 500 ml between 2 plants (250 ml each) straight at the base of the plant (to get the roots to the bottom of your pot) not my method but @Ronin to check when your plants need watering feel the weight before and after watering second week I up the dose to just under half strength (between a 1/4 and 1/2) and water 500 ml per plant but water in circles plant outwards spreading the roots(remember to feel the weight of your pots before and after) after that cant help you as I put the on a drip system :pass:

Right--Wile that is what is fun we all have techniques with same objective. Coco is very forgiving unless flat out bone dry.

I like to call it teasing the roots. Like you are pointing out--it is all about getting a good early root system. If not = stunters.

Exactly--did the same last PM with my young ones.
but water in circles plant outwards spreading the roots(remember to feel the weight of your pots before and after) after that cant help you as I put the on a drip system :pass:

Well i water everyday in three gal smart pots and one 5 gal smart pot and damn powdery mildew started in the top of a few of the girls and also on the side of a few smart pots. So should i just water everyday and spray the spores? The main reason i got coco was the always there oxygen level

Put a fan on their pots. You need a lot of circulation with all that moisture in there.

Not too complicate things, but, with coco water transportation still requires an osmotic balance. https://blog.udemy.com/osmosis-in-plants/

When my PPM/EC has been too low pots take a few days longer to dry out for re-watering. Coco can be over watered if pots not less than 1/2 dry. Too much water changes interaction of coco and nutes. And will turn coco into a bog at a constant saturation point.

Coco has some fundamental rules of use but after awhile one can finesse it with experience.

Often what looks like mold shows up on fabric pots--that is mostly salts. Last grow, thought had mold after inspecting and thinking back it was just the dioecious earth had applied heavily early on showing up on fabric.

Did read that vinegar solution spray can be used to control mold on outside of pots. Do not quote me on this one!

I get nute build up on the pots every time. Damn heavy feeders. As for mold...will, if it doesn't get too bad you can wash it...the plants at chop time. I've heard a milk solution works. I'd try 3% h2o2. Then keep an eye on it. Sorry, are the plants in bloom?
Also it doesn't hurt to keep air moving all over. I have fans mix that air up. Up down around the rooms and then exhausted out.
I don't use perilite. Straight coco for me. in flower I feed up to 1.75 liter every day in 3 gl rddi root pots.
