Another type of Shallow Water Culture.
This is a DIY setup I made in order to show the same concept but using off the shelf tubs from a hardware store where the reservoir is underneath the top two tubs. The principle is the same with the top tub fill with clay, sitting low in an enclosing tub and draining directly into the reservoir which it is sitting on. The point here was to provide a bigger quantity of substrate to grow maybe four plants in. But there are problems here. Not least of which is having to lift the top two tubs to get to the reservoir. Also these tubs sagged a bit and were a bit unwieldy. So I don't recommend doing it this way, but I show it for illustrative purposes to show that there are many ways to implement the Shallow Water Culture.
I'd also like to mention at this point that in all my grows I have never had to add any extra cal/mag. I have found that normal 3 part GH nutrients were sufficient.
