Auto Grow: Lemon Zkittlez / Sour Orange Mars TS1000

Hi guys,

So I've been a long time member however this is my first actual grow journal. I've only tried out a microgrow in the past a few years back which wasn't that fruitful, so this time round after a few years out I've set my first 'proper' indoor grow. I got hold of some Dutch Passion Lemon Zkittlez Autos and with the order I also got some free auto seeds, one being Bakery Seeds Sour Orange. Being a fan of orange strains I decided to pop it as well! I germinated the seeds using the Ronin method if anyone is familiar of this, I highly recommend it, both seeds popped and sprouted on the 4th day. In my research with this type of setup and using Plant Magic Soil Plus and with a 20L pot it's not essential to use the Plant Magic Oldtimers Grow nutrient or any other grow nutrient, however any opinions on this is more than welcome as I am on day 14 and could perhaps add it in slowly? I have not used anything apart from water so far in the soil, and intend to use the Oldtimers Bloom in flowering, again would be open minded to suggestions of adding anything else in. I am keeping an eye on the plants via an IP camera, and thinking of getting a WiFi plug in order to control the humidifier through the growing stage, as right now I am switching the humidifier on for a few hours each day to top up the humidity. I have opted for a 20/4 hour split on the LED grow light although was tempted to do 24. The Mars TS1000 seems to have decent reviews and I have to say it seem to be doing the job, but what do you guys think, is it looking alright for being 14 days in? Also the temperature is sitting at 19/20 degrees max and drops to 16 at night when the light goes off.

Do you guys think it’s worth getting a small heater? The tent is in a small room about 3mx3m, so I might get a small oil filled radiator to keep the room warm.

Day 19

Quick update. I watered them yesterday 500ml each, as it is a 20L pot I want to ensure all the root system gets water. Plants are looking happy so far. I have also opened up one of the velcrow flaps at the bottom of the Mars Hydro tent to allow fresh air to get pulled through. The oil heater is doing it's job nicely in keep the temps between 20-23c with it being 4c outside.

Lemon Zkittlez

This is now showing signs of flowing so this week i have started the Plant Magic Bloom nutes, 2.5ml/1L for each plant. They are also getting the Plant Magic evolution spray once a week. Apart from that i am keep the nutes pretty simple and not adding anything else. I'm really impressed with these as they have been very low maintenance. Instead of removing fan leaves i am trying to tuck them in where I can so that the lower nodes also get light. Everyday I notice growth with these two. The humidity has been lowered to about 40 and the temps are sitting nicely at 22/23c.

I seriously thought i had lost this plant, check out what it looked like here below on Day 25 after I removed the over-dominating fan leaves. Now look at Day 35, as it had a solid root system in the 20L pot it naturally thrived after the fan leaves were removed. Day 35 it doesn't even look like the same plant!

Day 41
Lemon Zkittlez

She is starting to get thick and is drinking more water by the day so I have started to water more regularly now which is keeping her happy.

Did a slight trim of large fan leaves to allow light to lower nodes, she responds really well and is now showing signs of flowering. She smells fantastic I must say, sweet orange'y smell whenever I check in on the tent.

Finally she is starting to form crystals around the bud leaves and the bud sites are thickening out. The older timers bloom nutrient is all I am using at this stage and seems to be doing the trick, I hope the buds start to become more dense in the following few weeks. There is a nice smell coming from the leaves now, a real sweet lemon terpy smell.

She is growing really nicely and more of the smaller bud sites are reaching for the light now. I haven't used a scrog but have been carefully tucking in leaves to allow smaller bud sites to receive more light. She has a dominant smell in the tent over the Lemon Zkittlez, and considering her growth at the start was not the best there are a lot of bud sites on the plant.

Day 59
Lemon Zkittlez
Lower leaves have started to shade as she sucks the nutrients out of the leaves. Still feeding 2.5ml/L of the Old Timers Bloom, followed by plain water, intermittently. She's really starting to thicken out now.

A little bit behind on the bud development but she is getting thicker by the day.

I was thinking about getting a small oil heater as well. I'm also running 24/4 and noticed that the temps dropped quite a bit during the night. I have an inkbird temp controller running my exhaust to regulate the temp when the lights are on and works pretty darn well, so plugging the heater into that would be awesome. I'm also running the TS1000 and liking it so far.

im pulling up a chair to watch the show :pop: have you thought about going 24hrs lights on to keep the temps up

I started with the 24 hour light schedule but while listening to the GrowCast podcast they were talking about autoflower light schedules. They said you wouldn't notice that much more of a yield from the additional 4 hours and it might be better to let your plants and lights rest. There is something scientific about what plants do during the night. I am new a growing and just follow orders from people who sound smart.

That would be pretty awesome. I have just looked into these inkbird temp controllers, that would be slick to have the temperature controlled like that.

So I managed to get hold of a second hand Swan oil filled radiator for next to nothing price wise and it has a built in thermostat and timer. I've set it to the lowest power and it ticks off and on and perfectly keeps the tent temperature higher than before from 19c to 23-25c. The heater is in the room where the tent is and not actually in the tent. I was going to get a tube heater but opted for this instead. It means that i can now run the humidifier for longer periods without the tent getting too wet. I watered the plants 400ml each last night, 200ml in the inner circle and 200ml on the outside. The leaves seem to be growing faster than to begin with, I think the roots are still establishing as they are in 20L pots. Let's hope they make a good harvest.

Another quick update while I have the chance. Can someone explain to me what’s happening with the Sour Orange, it seems to be growing predominantly on one side and the nodes aren’t growing in the upwards direction, it’s almost limp on one side and strong on the other. I trimmed a few of the bigger fan leaves, 3 to be precise and swivelled the pot around. I used Plant Magic Evolution spray a few nights ago and the Lemon Zkittlez is looking really nice and happy, growing fast each day and just an easy growing plant so far, it’s growing on the 5th node now. If anyone can give advise on what I should do with the Sour Orange it would be greatly appreciated, I’m hoping trimming it slightly will give more energy for it to grow at the new node sites. I might actually cut off the top fan leaves that are dominating, as per the second pic, going with gut instinct here!
