Day 54 - a tired Dad

I should tell you that I stopped spraying STS on the dad after I thought some flowers had opened. Maybe three days after noticing male flowers. As you can see here, it grew a lot of flowers like a true male. Also, you can see that a lot of the flowers have already released their pollen.

The pistils show that pollination is taking place.

See the many tan pistils? Those have been pollinated. And there are a lot of them. I think the dad has used up half of its pollen.

The left mother is already fruity and quite grapey. The other one has a musty smell with fruit undertones. I'll keep seeds from both, of course, but think I'll grow out seeds from the "grapier" mom first.

Just out of curiosity: breeding? like do you have a breeding goal like for a specific cultivar? Or are you ‘chuck’n pollen” just to make/extend a seed stash? Both? Hopefully the pollen chuck’n descriptor is not offensive.

i have distant dreams of breeding some of my starter stash of beans. cpl packs are regular beans so im pretty positive ill get a bunch of male plants to try out. Again, distant dreaming here…

thanks.

I started with six plants and culled to three. Other than that it's just a pollen-chucking enterprise. I'm just trying to put away a lifetime supply of auto seeds.

I'm always crossing something. You can separate your males and pollinate just a branch. I did that recently with black widow and chick magnet. I'm calling my new F1 "Black Chick." I'd like to create a new wonderful strain. But I'm really just learning and having fun.

Thats awesome monn. I have similar aspirations, however that journey is much further down the gardening path for my currently novice grow knowledge. If the beans i have so far pan out to somewhere near upper 90% germ rate, ill be sitting pretty for a good long while. The more i grow the more ill know, then ill throw my hand in the breeding grounds…MwaHaHaa! (Whoops sorry my mad scientist slipped out there)
