If the top layer is dry you can water a little and you'll be fine. The biggest thing in soil is getting those wet to dry cycles going for the healthy root system.

Thus means drenching the entire pot then letting go until the pot is light when you pick it up and drench again BEFORE THE PLANTS START TO DROOP. It may take a while to get the hang of but you'll get there before long.

- what A Trains says! I had a similar situation being relatively new and the consensus from the peeps on here was exactly what A Train says. It feels like a slightly imperfect way of doing it but it is (i'm assured!) something that you get used to relatively quickly. A good tip if you're not sure is to get the same sized pot and fill it with the same growing medium and then give it a good drenching so you can feel just how heavy a fully watered pot is, then you can compare and contrast between the two.

good luck buddy.

what about for the plant that are too large/ I'm too lazy to pick up?

Thank you, at the moment they are tiny so i only need a little water each time, once i have watered them it is not a good idea to poke my finger in as it will disturbe them. I am going to use a tablespoon or 2 each time and check them a couple of times a day.
Once they get big then the picking up method seems the way to go.

Happy hippy, are you the same bloke i met in Calcutta a couple of years ago? Happyhippy was your e mail address
