In an upcoming project I am going to do some breeding for seed production and as I am completely new to this, thought I would get a consensus.

Also open to suggestions if someone has had success with a particular strain or cross using HBD.

You could always inbreed then do a cross. That way you have plany of HBD to choose from for your cross..

See, this is why I ask questions like this... makes good sense. I do have 5 HBD beans but I realize I will want many many more longterm. OK after I inbreed the HBD to get plenty of breeding stock? Hell maybe develop 2 strains then eventually cross them. Am I correct in thinking that was the way to breed vigor back into your strain?
So my answer would be to inbreed 1st get plenty of breeding stock then cross both Cheese and Black JH with HBD, then cross those? Dam, I've already popped my Black JH. I will have to place another bean order as that is all I have left (5 HBD, 1 Cheese Candy and 1 currently germed Black JH)
That being the case, I guess anything is up for grabs, have to do some research on what might compliment the HBD.
I could probably start my Black JH cross now but I have super limited space. Playing with more than 1 strain at a time will be darn near impossible for me. Hmmmm...

The only way you wont get hybrid vigor is by breeding with F1s because they already have it.. If you are crossing IBLs you will get vigor from adding new genetics into the mix.

Wow, much knowledge. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Will def. keep this in mind. So when stabilizing a plant into the 4th and 5th generation there is pretty much always another f1 cross in the works?

I dont understand you question. when in the 4 or 5 gen the only way you get back into F1 is if you cross the strain with another.

I was thinking what Evol said, just didn't want to chime in with wrong info lol, me not havee much experience heh. But my understanding of genetics is that vigor comes by introducing new genes, in other words the first offspring of a cross. I think this is the coveted F1 vigor.

I could be wayyy off here so I apologize in advance and hope for correction, but I thought "hybrid vigor" specifically was referring to the vigor from very different plants specifically an Indica and Sativa type offspring. Evol?

If you breed HBD x HBD for 4 or 5 generations then cross it with another strain the seeds will be F1 and have hybrid vigor.

If you cross an F1 HBD with an F1 of another strain then the seeds will not be any more vigorous because both parents already had hybrid vigor and you cant have double hybrid vigor.. Hope that helps

Ah, ok cool, I was on the halfway on the right track lol.

Ya, I think I may have been halfway right as well. I was thinking if I crossed HBD and Cheese Candy to a 5th gen then mixed it back to Black JH or back into a full HBD, it would regain vigor. Oh man, I'm not even high and I'm getting confused on why I wanted to do it this way originally. Beyond it would be cool to have "my own mix", I'd like to breed for the particular characteristics I prefer. Hopefully they are present in HBD, CC and BJH as those are the beans I have.
I just want to end up with a ton of Autofem (or really just auto's fem or not, might could use some males) seeds that I like smoking.
I guess(def. guessing) if I cross Autofem x Autofem I would get Autofem but then if I cross F1 x F1 (seed of my 1st cross x seed of my 1st cross) I would get a female/male mix or an Auto/Photo mix or a female auto, male auto, female photo, male photo mix? heheheheh ya.
