Hey everyone, delighted to make my first post, you guys have been my whole foundation for getting into growing. Everything I know started here from each of you, so THANKS first and foremost! I'll keep it short because i'd like to know alot, so i'll refrain from making it too lengthy for you!

The setup:
Standard 5x5 lightproof reflective tent
Standard 4 inch carbon filter for smells later
9 5-gallon Fabric Pots Suspended over catchers via circular grills for run off
2 Kingled 1000w LED lights
2 15-gallon totes with aquarium bubbler and air stone for bubbling away Chlorine from tap water. Also for mixing nute's.
2 6-inch fans pointed between lights and leaves for added circulation.
PH and EC meters.
Temp/Humidity meter. Magnetic so can stick in various locations for good tent awareness.
A simple hand pump to extract run off each feeding

In the room the tent resides, an A/C unit set to 68 keeps temperatures in the tent at a stable 70-79 during hottest parts of the day. Humidity moves from 45% to 65%, generally when i am just finishing watering.

Substrate:
Coco Coir and Perlite, 50/50 mix, self buffered for two 8 hour periods with cal-mag to satisfy cations.
4 gallons per pot, as I neglected to factor in coco loss from rinsing. Fabric Pot sides are rolled down slightly to allow airflow.

The Nute's:
Canna Coco A +B
Botanicare Cal-mag Plus + Silica Blast
General Hydroponics PH up/down and Diamond Nectar Humic Acids

The Water:
Tap Water as testing during the week of germination showed PPM of 140 -168 at it's highest, tap water is bubbled for 24 hours to remove chlorine before mixing anything in. Since using Coco Coir calls for higher cal-mag, I assume this is advisable. It is definetely advisable to my wallet !

The Babies:
9 Crop King White Widow Auto's, germinated per supplier recommendations in paper towel and spring water. 100% germination, all planted straight into final pot and sprouted within 6 hours of each other, 2.5 days later.

As of posting exactly 1 week old from poking through the soil in final pots.

History so far:
Lots of staring at little leaves, watering with very light nute's mix (500ec max) every other day until 20% runoff. Spotted a small black fly fleeing my tent as i entered yesterday, so I have gotten Neem oil and mixed a light dose to mist everything with. Plants seem Healthy, but as this is my first grow, I will never be sure.

Questions I have:

When should I increase nute's dosage to recommended 1100ec value? I read everywhere 'when veg begins' but i am unsure of when it does!

How often should I be watering? The appearance of the small black fly prompted google to tell me I may be keeping my coco too moist. This is reinforced by the idea that my baby roots need air to grow, so I wonder if I am watering too much. The leaves are not drooping downwards as you can see, however.

I have read that my lights are not true 1000w lights, closer to 300 in fact, and I worry if they are enough? I have left both veg and bloom switches on as well as a 24/0 schedule to help with any deficiencies i may have for now. This also helps keep that sweet spot of 70-79 degrees im holding perfectly.

Originally I planned to do a ScROG with the trellis net you can see in the pictures, however I'm getting the feeling now that my tent is too small for that many in a scrog, so I am leaning towards just individually training them with simple LST. What would you guys do?

Welcome to AFN! I was just like you.Its true its a great place to learn and grow and make grow bros or foes lol jk But yea welcome. You may want to move your lights up allot . They dont need much light at this stage and too close. I like to leave my lights at the top until flower then move them as close as I can . Just a thought. The rest of your setup looks fine. Peace

You should increase feed as needed. If they only need 800 ppm then 1100 could be a waste and burn your plants. I like to start around 500ppm or .5ec and watch for light coloured leaves or dark ones. Too light leaning towards yellow and I bump the feed by .2

Putting hydroton on top helps prevent evaporation. I start watering 3 times a day after the first week and about 5 times a day around week 2-3 depending on vigour. They don't need to be watered much the first week especially in large pots. Give them time to let their roots develop and get around 3-5 nodes.

You have a5x5 tent that needs 750 watts minimum of LED light, it isn't a small tent btw. Whether you run them 18 hours or 24 it won't entirely make up for the lack of adequate ppfd to cover that sqft. You've spent your money already so you just have to make do. It's your first grow and what is more important is finishing without problems.

I would still scrog them to maximize your light. LST is fine as well. Here's my previous northern lights grow in coco with 2 pots and an automatic drain to waste. I got to about 1100ppm but I don't think it was necessary.

You guys really need to do some research into LEDs.

No...you do not need 750w of LEDs. You would be awesome with half that. 8 GOOD lights...like COBs or Quantum Boards with good Mean Well power from reputable companies, Samsung, Citizen, Cree, Bridgelux, Mean Well, etc.

Your "1000w" light is 170w...and those 170 watts are not even close to what 170w can do with good gear. Run some 1812s or 1818 Citizens at 52w each and be amazed at what 50w is all about. Skip the blurple lights, they are literally all the same made with cheap diodes and plastic drivers. Remember this: these things literally pay for themselves, get good lighting once and be done with it. The cool thing about COBs is that they are modular and expandable too. Your little blurple lights will work, but for the same money you could have had 4 Gen 6 Citizen 1818s with a nice Mean Well HLG driver that will last for 10 years or more. Just wait till you see what the power of COBs can do.

I based that number off a general opinion that 30-37ish watts per square-foot is adequate because ppfd can sit in the 1000's especially when supplementing with c02. I'm using 480 watts of bridgelux strips for 16sqft and killing it ATM with 700+ppfd So I don't have much reason to not believe LED gardener or Fluence. Personally I think quantum boards and lights strips especially are superior to traditional cobs.

Not saying that someone can't grow well at 25-15 watts per square foot of quality LED light but if you can do well with that there's no reason the 30-37sqft range would hurt but only benefit

Thanks for the insight guys, I admit I did not have enough knowledge about lighting to make an informed decision with it. However, I'm not totally strapped for cash, and this problem isn't totally out of my reach. What could you all advise for me in the range of $500 to get me on board with proper LED lighting? Any links to particular lights you think would do well?

Thanks again for all the help, it's because of you all i'm even THIS successful!

All my suggestions are sold out. Quantum board 132's are sold out and a strip build would exceed your budget. Check in the quantum board thread, maybe someone can suggest something from alibaba. You could always start out with supplementary lighting and build up. Sorry I can't be more help on this

My boy got 25oz off a single Dutch Passion Euforia auto from two Citizen Gen6 90CRI 3500k CLU058 1825 COBs running at about 100w each. It went for close to 4 months...she was a huge DWC monster. COBs cooled via active Mechatronix heat sinks w/ nasty little high torque fans. I own them now and hopefully grabbing another six 1818s with a driver tomorrow. The Euforia was LST'd and then trimmed almost daily...by at least 10 inches. And the thing had fungus gnats!!! Like...it got REALLY bad. We processed it and dried it here...then he gave it to me. There was 10 colas that we're the size of volleyballs, they looked like mud wasp nest hanging in my tent. Also...in the same tent was Blue Mazaar and Sour Stomper under 1818s. Total light was about 510w between six 1818s and two 1825s and those got about 5oz and 2 oz respectively. He gave it to me. It's weird talking about it, things have changed. Not a bad haul though. The Sour Stomper was BOMB.
