Grow Mediums Trial of Firsts

I absolutely hate the unexplained lack of vertical growth I get with autos sometimes. I'm always wondering, did I stunt it, does have something do do with the intensity of my lights, is it some environmental or genetic aberration. So many possibilities and eventually I harvest the couple ounces it produces and move on hoping to get it right next time. :smoking:

PS
I am blitzed out of my mind right now on some Geapefruit Auto. And your girls look beautiful otherwise.

Hahaha, nice!!! I just got home from work, torched a few bongs of sensi star, flipped on some Jerry Garcia Band and read your post.
My bad, these are not auto's as far as I know. Before I found this forum I had purchased these feminized photo's from Barney's. I suppose they could be auto's and one plant, the 8 ball kush, at times seems to be starting to flower but then in another light or angle, just heavy growth from the tops.

I have them on 18/6 lighting schedule and did I mention I am really impatient. It's only been 3 weeks with the autopots turned on. The main staems are as thick as my middle finger and the branching is tremendous but it's all within 12" of the growing medium (coco/perlite).

Well at least they are photos and you can take the time to get it right before flipping them and they do look damn nice. I have some RQS Pineapple Kush photos I'm planing on scrogging with four of the 8.5 liter autopots next run. I will tag you in when it gets started in a few weeks.

Day 35 in Autopots (29 days since auto feedings began)

Photoperiod Grow 1 8 Ball Kush and 1 Sweet Tooth
60 Days from Sprout
42 Days of Veg
35 Days on Autofed Nutrients (.47g Epsom Salt/g; 6ml/g GH Micro and 9ml/g GH Bloom) [Modified Lucas Formula for Coco].
7 Days under Scrog Screen
Res Temp 63 - 72 degrees with ice jugs added for chill twice daily
530 True watts of LED and CFL

My screen has 187 bud sites. By rough count of the filled sites today I have roughly 40% of the screen filled. I am guessing since these are photos, I should shoot for 60-70% filled before flipping to 12/12?!? Feedback? Thanks.

I've never done a scrog before, but from what I've seen I agree with Sensi Jay that once stretch starts you should be able to fill most of the holes that are remaining.

Thanks very much @Sensi Jay and @HemiSync

These are both short statured strains both estimated to be just under 36" and I agree, I think I need what stretch there might be to get that screen filled. I ordered some auto seeds (Dark Devils, Green Crack and Crystal Meth) and my next AP grow will be without the scrog and just letting the auto's go. Thanks again.

First, IMO, your running too low PH. I don't understand why or where the idea came from to run a res at ph levels below 5.9. 5.9 to 6.2 are right in the middle of the best absorption of nutrients scale. I run my pots at 6.18-6.28 without a problems. That pump is likely part of the problem also. Also, let your solution set for at least 30 minutes before checking ph. Wait another 30 minutes after you make adjustments to check again, then ad to the res. I've rushed mine a couple times, only to end up with ph being off. It pays to wait.

I held the ph as close to 6.2 as I could throughout the entire period of my last grow and I had the best grow and largest harvest to date with my auto pots. and not one ph related issue the entire grow.

Ok @pop22 @Hansbricks @HemiSync @Penrey @Sensi Jay

Seems I might be having a problem a mere 24 hours after starting the rez and air domes. My quick look diagnosis is possible Zink deficiency perhaps caused by pH spike in the pots.

My res was pH 5.8 when I turned the tap. I just checked it and the res itself was pH 6.3. I added pH down to bring it to 5.6 but not sure how I would check the pH at the roots.

One other thing, I took the circulation pump out of the res last night because it seemed to be heating up the mixture. It went from 70F to 76F and it's now back to 71F.

Any thoughts, ideas or analysis appreciated. Thanks in advance. By the way this is the 8 ball kush, the sweet tooth is not showing this bright light green to yellow discoloration. Correction, less severe but it is happening to the sweet tooth also).

I just removed the pots and checked pH in the trays and it was 6.4.

I placed the pots in 5 gallon pails and flushed with 1/2 gallon of 1/2 strength nutes and pH of 5.7.

More research proves it could also be sulfer.

I am going to buy epsom salts. gonna flush them again with straight water pH 5.7 and then I may dump the res and go back to basics just base nutes(no drip clean, no cal/mag, no superthrive).

Hey thanks @pop22 I appreciate your input.

I am open to any solid suggestions as I just melded a lot of what I read into a starting place with a mind to adjust to what works.

The pump burnt out weeks ago and I am not using any pump or air in the res now and ph has remained stable both in the res and in the pots (pots 6.0 res 5.9 - 6.0).

I have not been giving the solution that time to stabilize so I will start waiting as you suggest. Once I was seeing that 5.8 or .9 I have been pouring it right into the res. Great tips, thanks.

Things might be picking up, the girls went through 5 gallons in five days and that's a first!!!

Looks good Screwauger. I have seen great results with flipping to fill and flipping after. I think it just depends on how much time you want to invest in it. I myself would probably flip now and train through the stretch.
Where I am it is going to be really humid in a couple of months. I would have issues with a thick canopy here come end of September.
They do look beautiful. :pass:
