This is a good article but it's incomplete. I've got some good info on silica that I'll post here at my earliest opportunity.
Silica should never be added to your res directly at full strength. Straight silica can cause other nutrients to drop out of solution, making them unavailable to the plants. Silica will also raise pH dramatically. Silica should be mixed with plain water, phed, then slowly added to the res. For my 50 gallon system I mix 100 ml of silica to 2 gallons of water. I ph it to 5.8 and then add it slowly over a period of several hours. I do this at every res change, which is about every 21 days on average.
