I'm trying a Viparspectra KS3000 this grow instead of my 315W Sun Systems CMH to try and lessen the heat.

It's working well and I'm getting great growth rates however the girls don't have aroma they did under the CMH.

Am I imagining this or is it a thing?

The CMH is different than the VS 3000 in terms of the spectrum and in the amount of heat given off. The biggest difference that I see is the amount of blue in the Vipar Spectra.

Beautiful plants, by the way.

Lots of advantages to LED, less heat being among the most significant, but the Philips CMH in the SunSystem ballast is probably the best quality of light you can buy for the money. I am literally referring to the actual photons, not the physical light. The SS with a Philips bulb has 92 CRI UVA&B, and I haven’t confirmed this, but 3100k bulb might even have enough deep red and IR to trigger the Emerson effect. I am not sure any LED can make all those claims, certainly not anything close the the same price as the SunSystem with a Philips bulb.

I have been using a SS CMH for years, I will get an LED someday, but for now I am sticking with the CMH. I believe the more complete spectrum is what accounts for the stronger terps. I didn’t look up your LED, but if it’s made with the same Samsung diodes that are pretty standard the CRI is probably in the low to mid 80s, much lower than the 92 of the CMH.
