I have a Sunon 120 mm fan from a friend, and have plugged it into one of those light dimmer sockets.Works perfectly, from 0 to 100, none of the weird noises or shutting down when dimming lower than 50%.

As I remember, I used to have a Sunon fan who would not work properly with THE SAME dimmer socket, always humming and/or shutting down when dimming too much.

I have read some pros and cons about using DC Axial fans with light dimmers, but in my case, it works, no overheating from socket nor fan.

The one I have now has "Impedance protected" written on the front label, on which I deduced it should be an advantage when restricting it, but that s as much as I got from it, complete electricity noob.

Can someone with more knowledge on Sunon fans or electrics in general tell me if it advisable to use it on a light dimmer switch? Or is it a fire hazard?

Bump....this is my fan model
SUNON.jpg

It takes around 22 Watts

The light dimmer states 1.6Amp , and 40w-300w.

Am I doing something wrong here? Wouldn't want the fan to drop dead when most needed or worse....

Can you show us the "dimmer socket?" Is it a wall light switch/dimmer or what; any specs on the dimmer? What country is this meant for? It looks like the 220+ volts fan supply is not US electrical system compatible.

What exactly are you trying to use this fan for? Is this for growing purposes? Micro grow?

Ok, this is the socket
prise dimm.jpg

It says 40w- 300w on the back, also 1.6 Amp

I live in Europe ,so we use 220/230v

I use it as an extractor, with a DIY carbon filter- micro growing.

The fan is really strong ,makes a terrible noise when at full power so I was trying to reduce it, but I keep reading that it's not a good idea to use a light dimmer on a motor........others say it works for thhem, but I'm kinda worried something might break or worse.

Actually, never mind, I've re- installed the 120mm pc fan back. Sure it will be hotter, but not as hot as a smoldering house. Thank you all for your input.
