Due to the wife's planning some renovations in the next week or so, I've only got a 12"x15" cabinet that is 36" high to grow in. I'm going to do an Afghan Kush Ryder to start.

I've got the seed in a Jiffy cup with seedling starter soil right now. It's just starting to poke thru the soil. It's near a window, but not in direct sunlight.

I'd like to stick with a CFL until it starts flowering. Would a 45 watt 5500K CFL (150 watt equivalent) be ok to use for the first week or so? I've got a reflector to focus the light, and I can go to a higher wattage bulb after the first week or two.

Would a 90 watt LED be ok for the flowering stage? I can add lights later if I get a bigger area, but for right now it's the one very small cabinet.

Hey there sky, welcome-ish. I think that would be fine for the first week or so. 90 watt should be fine for one plant especially with a few cfls in there too. Just make sure your temps don't get too hot. What LED were you planing on getting?

Thanks for the replies Squid and Thai. My reflector is pretty large, so I could fit a 65 watt or maybe an 85 watt CFL without an issue if I go CFL all the way. The thing is that with a reflector I don't know if I can get more than one CFL in there.

I've looked a little further at LEDs and the Blackstar 135w looks pretty good.

Yes Blackstars are the way to go. There are several growers here using them and have had great results. Hopefully you can get a little bigger space before long.

The first "good" lights I ever used indoors for a whole grow were 125 actual watt (never go by equivalent wattage) CFLs in reflectors... They did well for 4 small photo-period plants with some LST, and are nice due to the low heat. At one point I upgraded to 3 reflectors and 5-6 plants in the space depending on pot size...

I use these now for side vertical lighting and seed starting...
