I’ve been using very basic soil. 1 Bag of top soil no nutes in soil.,1 bag of perlite , 1 bag vermiculite , 1 bag peat moss. It has been working ok. I would like to add something to give my plants a little boost while they are waiting for the nutes. I use fox farm after week 2. What would you add to this soil mix?

It seems to me that is a lot of perlite and vermiculite for one bag of soil. Of course I am just assuming they are all the same size of bag. I would add abut two more bags of soil to the mix. I use shrimp compost cause I can get it easily at the local hardware store. In the USA people seem to be able to buy bat guano. I think a bag of either might really grow your plants better. I add dolomite lime if the pH calls for it. I also add magnesium if the pH doesn't want the dolomite lime.

It kind of makes the nuits optional at first and grows a good root system.

When I first started to grow I thought the nuits were wicked important and went through hundreds of dollars in different nuits. Now I don't think it matters much what you use. I can't see the difference between the high price ones and miracle grow other than the name.

those amendment dont have nutrients so you might as well add 1/4 strength veg nutes early
worm cast
seaweed
guano
are options

but i rather buy a middle of the road complete soil that drains well

I'd get rid of the vermiculite for a start, cut the perlite by 2/3 and then just buy a half decent regular soil like John Innes. It'll not cost you any more than you're spending on stuff you don't really need.

it was a 40lb bag of soil and small bags of perlite, vermiculite and peat moss. I will look for shrimp compost or bat guano to add. About how much do I add, i

Thank you

About one bag on shrimp compost or bat guano for three equal size bags of soil. I hear worm casings are good also but I have never saw them for sale here in Canada.
