I chopped a small log into chips and put them in an unused clean paint can. I popped an 1/8 th inch hole in the bottom of the can and sealed the lid tightly. Next, I built a small fire and placed the can(s) over the flames. In a short time the gasses hissed out the small hole and pyrolysis was takin place. After about an hour thing settled down and I let the fire burn out. Out of each can I got about half of the volume that I started out with. I smashed the stuff with a hammer and mixed it in to the soil for my next round.
What a pain in the neck. I hope the stuff does miracles. Smoke in the eyes all day. Black lung disease from breathing the dust. I'm sure I had an impact on the environment by burning wood for a few hours. I'm not sure that Bio-Char is an "Eco-friendly" product. I'll use what I made but it's something to think about.
