sick plants (?) clone leaves turning yellow - help a newbie

Hi, newbie here, but I know people have "feelings" about cloning autos around here, let me just say I have a 00 seeds auto bubblegum and I took 2 small cuts for cloning with the intent of making 2 small clones and reversing 1 to pollenize the other, for seeds. So no, I am not expecting a great yield, I was just hoping to make another dozen seeds.

Took clones pretty small, they looked good--gave them a dip in clonex then 2 days in water, in a well-lit room ambient light only. Planted in happy frog after that in quart-ish plastic containers and put back into grow tent under LED, yellowing came about 1 week later. Now about 1.5 weeks in, it seems restricted to the older leaves and to not be increasing or doing so much more slowly.

Do you think this is an issue of root development, and the plants either yellowing because they are sending energy from fan leaves to root generation, OR that it is a nutrient deficiency but because the roots were forming yet?

Or does this look like something else I need to handle?

They are severely overwatered from what I can see. You really dont water clones during the rooting process. Stick them In moist soil. Place a humidity dome over them. Leave them alone. You want them to send out roots in. Search of water. If you jeep them wet they will not do the work for you and ultimately they will die. Not to be harsh but looks like a lost cause there IMO. Better luck next time.

I’ve had clones of photos look very yellow for 2+ weeks and then recover. Little cuttings like that need extra support. Definitely put a dome over them and move them to a spot where they have less intense light. The yellowing is being caused by leaf photosynthesis occuring without a root system so the cuts are relocating nutes towards the apical meristem region. Also keep the temps warm in the soil. You will be battling rot vs root formation at the 1.5 week point. Still possible to recover but don’t mess with them too much. Def no nutes either...just patience.

Hey....so I took 1 more clone, which was more on the recommended 6-8" side, today. Nursing my yellows along, in re-potting 1 I see a rood bud.

Glad you have a root bud. It does not take much of a root for the plant to survive. You may get a plant out of it yet. Just have to keep the humidity high and the medium a little moist. Does your dome have vents?

handy tip I learned from the forums: if you root in cups with soil, put the soil and cut in a clear cup then place that cup inside another non-transparent solo cup. This way you can see the roots easily when they form by simply lifting the clear cup up and you don’t have to disturb the rooting process. And you shouldn’t have to repot until it’s root bound, again easy to see in the clear cup. Finally, you can create a humidity dome/chamber by using another cup as a lid. I use clear transparent lids when I want the light in and non-transparent when I don’t. Plus you can make different size vents in the top of the cups and you can have a library of different sizes to swap out as you progress in weaning them off from high humidity to 60-70% veg RH. All 4 of those tiny little clones came off that 2 week old mother in the pics below. They got super yellow and I was sure they were gone but they made it. Took a full 3 weeks before new growth and roots were visible. Again photo period plants though.
