Right I'm embarking on my next grow. I'm going to be using regular seeds that I kept from my last Short Stuff MI5 and Russian Rocket Fuel grow.

Im going to be going outdoors for this (latitude 35.2), on a south facing balcony that receives good 9 hours of direct sunlight, 14 overall. By harvest time it will be 12 hours overall (dont know balcony hours). Temperatures are high over the next 3 months, last year the average was 33C, with highs up to 43C and lows of 22C. Its rare to see clouds or rain this time of year.

Having grown vegetables in the milder months of the year, I have realized the sun does really get HOT and more is not necessarily a good thing, so I have created a shade net (green nylony mesh thing) box, that should diffuse light at least a little. When I put my other herbs (basil, thyme etc) in there they seem to be a lot happier and get way less droopy. Had a friend that grew an auto in this kind of weather, and it just turned into a 5" budsickle within days of going outside (though he did make a couple of other mistakes that probably contributed)

The plants will be grown in 6L pots using coco coir with a run to waste drip system, that is hooked up to a barrel reservoir with air pump and air stones. I will be feeding 3 times a day until water just about begins to drain. I'll be using canna coco nutes custom programme (check their website) that I'm tweaking to the auto lifecycle.

Day 7 (24/07)

I've planted 9 seedlings, which are now in their first week of life and are planted in a plug tray. The medium I used to start them off is a mix of coco coir, green waste compost, grape pomace (microbes), perlite that is pHd to 6.5 out of the bag.

To water I spray finely misted tap water, mixed with a high dose (5ml/L) of root stimulator called radifarm (ingredients: protein hydrolysate, polysaccharides and specific precursors of rooting processes (arginine, asparagine and tryptophane). I spray to drench the soil until water begins to drip from the bottom of the plug every 2 days.

Tap water is unfortunately very hard and alkaline 0.8ec and pH ranges from 8.0-8.5. Once I add the radifarm at 1.5ec I then pH to 6-6.5 using white wine vinegar.

The plants are currently kept on a south facing window that receives a good amount of sunlight.

The plants are currently still on their first set of leaves (after cotyledons).

In preparation for the move (once the second set of leaves is established) I have soaked hydroton in pH 5.8 water (vinegar is used to reduce pH) to line the bottoms and surfaces of pots. I have also hydrated half a brick of coco (big one) with pH 5.8 water. Tomorrow I will check coco runoff to see whether the pH'd water has done the job.

Let me know if you have any comments, this is my 5th grow, 2nd auto, but first outdoor!

Good luck. Sounds like you got it all put together. Ill tune in to watch your grow.

Right here are some delayed updates..

And now up to date (today)

24/08 - day 37

As temperatures have been to high, I've decided to keep these indoors until temps cool down. Maintaining res temperatures will be difficult and want to avoid lockout (temp affects pH and solubility) and heat stress.

The grow room is cooled by an air conditioning unit which keeps temps 23-28C, under a 600W light 12 inches away from the grow tips.

At the moment I am following the canna coco a+b schedule for hard water on light feeding (ec 2.0) and a ph of 5.8. Ive brought down the radifarm (root stim) dosage to minimum recommended, am dosing 2ml/L canna boost and a full dose of enzymes (i use enzymatic drain cleaner which is the same just cheaper). To pH down I'm using Phosphoric Acid, and when I miss the mark I add some potassium silicate to pH up. 1-2 times a week I'll foliar feed canna boost mixed with a surfecant pH adjusted using phosphoric acid.

I feed the root system twice a day at the moment, until i get 5-10% running to waste. Its worth noting that I started at once every 3 days using wet-dry cycle to encourage root growth, then turned it up once every 2 days, to a single daily watering and now i split my single daily watering into 2 sessions of 30 min each. I'm going to see how this goes before i turn it up to 3.

This is my first time growing hydro and seeing the coco so damp all the time does make me wonder whether I'm overwatering. Still, no signs of problems suggests everything is going ok. Hopefully my air pump with 4 air stones is adding sufficient oxygen to the solution.

The first pistils showed about two weeks ago and since then the plant has been continued to stretch vertically, and is now showing signs of slowing down. In a few days I think I'll ramp up my ferts a bit to recommended flowering dosage (Phase 1 Flower).

So far comparing to my Plant Magic organic soil mix, using the parents of these seeds, I can definitely say that the rate of growth is higher, and I have more branches and foliage within the same time. Last time I managed to pull 1-1.5oz per plants from 6 plants total, started under 600w HPS and finished under 250W CFL. Hopefully if all goes to plan I should hit the 2 oz mark this time!

Question 1, my basic chemistry knowledge tells me that resevoir temperature can affect solubility (positive relationship), the pH (i dont know this relationship) and the reactivity between compounds (eg A and B solutions).. Does anyone know any existing commercial solutions or custom a+b formulations that still perform as expected in a 20-45C temperature range?

Question 2, what would go wrong if I used canna coco A+B temperature range and how could I mitigate the effects?

Question 3, once plants are in the phase past flower elongation and transition into gaining on girth, would 12 hours of sunlight be better on yield than 24 hours of 600w hps?

Question 4, how do you go about aclimatizing your plants to a 10C average gain in temperature when going from inside to outside and minimizing stress?

3. yes if your days are sunny everyday...and full sun all day..
4. 25% sun first day 50% 2nd 75% third....
