So the thing is to get a good sample size we gotta have high numbers so how do you seed?

Do you..

Use a tray and pique the seedlings after X days?

Use a pot-tray and just drop them in their final pot later?

Have so much space and substrate that you plant each seed directly into their final pot?

Or do you do combinations like:
* Large pot-trays where each pot is 1/16 galon (250ml)
* Larger separate seedling pots (7x7x9cm)
* Final pot

What's a good minimum sample size for a generation? I can kick off anywhere between 50 and 400 seedlings in my space but I'd like to hear your experiences.

For example: If you grow a long veg strain, sow them in a try and then pique them; You are subdividing the roots by damaging them making it a denser ball closer to the trunk.

if your just trying to max out your population size for the given light and space then I say solo cups from start to finish with multiple seeds planted and selected upon (cull all but the best). you can cram about 100 cups under a 600 watt that way and if you start with 3 to a cup you should have a very nice population of vigorous females by the end of flower. the cup is big enough to get a feel for the veg characteristics, allows enough room to see floral development and will allow plants to stay healthy enough to produce viable seed if properly managed so.... cups FTW lol thats my .02 cents :D

100 is a good number to start with, especially if you arent experienced with high plant counts, the maintainance can really bury you if you dont stay on top of it. plus 100 is a really good way to see what a seed lot has in it but 30 is probably the minimum id say to do any "real" breeding (not that less makes u any less of a breeder..... you just cant properly assess genotype with any less imo)

i put my seeds in the dirt.. then water then they pop up... :pass:It takes about 3 days 5 max..

This one for breeding. are you breeding??

Im trying something new this spring with my F2 stock

http://www.haxnicksusa.com/rootrainers/

So you can peel them open? That' interesting, I've seen some fabric bags you can open on the sides for transplanting before but never nursery ones.

Oh I would too but I'm way too cheap for that. I bought hundrets of liters of coco just because I could get it on the cheap lol .. so i gotta make use of that coco or face an existential crisis.

Didn't you have that unicorn picture? oh yeah the watering alone would be a pain in the ass. I'll take your solo cup idea but translate them to trays (size of the pots in the trays) since i can bottom feed them without much hassle. I guess I'll start with 50 just to see what gives.
I've never taken care of more than 35 plants at once so adding a batch of 50 should be interesting at the least :p

I had a bagseed of a really electric sativa that I selfed using sts and would like to make more of(more weed of this). The problem is that the plant was rather spindly(to be expected from a sativa) and short(problem) so I wanna see if I can't find a better vegging pheno and select towards that. Right now I got about 400 seeds of that strain left.
