I soaked two seeds in separate glasses of distilled water. They both cracked in less than a day. Seed #1 put out it's Taproot and I put it into soil and it sprouted just fine. Seed #2 cracked and I can see white along the crack, but the Taproot has not emerged after 2 days like that. Is it bad? Do I wait longer in the glass? Just put it in soil and see what happens? What other possibilities?

You shouldn't keep seeds submersed in water, they will suffocate. Overnight soak is fine, even better with ga3 dissolved in hot water and cooled. Then put straight in wet paper towl in darkness or just straight in to soil, coir is good for germinating or rockwool.

There is so much conflicting information out there. People say don't do the paper towel method because you can break the taproot, so do it in water. Others swear by the paper towel method. I've done both. I dunno.

for future reference, this is a superb way of doing seeds you get a tap root and a sprout also that about it drowing in the water is correct your meant to just leave it to see if it drops to the bottom and they can die with no oxygen . i would just pot her in your soil or coco but ya gotta have patience in the growing game no seeds are the same

I don't know why people have such a hard time wrapping their heads around germination - Mother nature does not have paper towels. Starter cubes, Root Riot, Rapid Rooters, rock wool or right in the soil all work with nature buy providing moisture, air and friction to remove the shell as the seedling exits the media. Plant the seed 1/2 inch deep in a moistened starter cube (I use 1/4 strength nutrients with a pinch of kelp) Keep warm ~ 80°F and moist not soggy. If the seeds are viable they will germinate. I run the lights 24/0 RH 60% until first true leaves then 18/6.

If your seeds are 5 or more years old or they have been stored poorly soak them overnight (8 hours) in a mild kelp or GA3 solution and plant as above. If they are really old then get the GA3 and scuff the shells with the striker on a match book before soaking for 24 hours but watch them as soon as they split get them out of the soak and plant them.

I just had a devil of a time with my latest germination as my water source was contaminated! I lost 11 seeds before I realized my error. My top-off tank had gone anerobic and the water was contaminated with pathogens. It would not bother a growing plant irrigated with it but it digested the seeds as they opened. Once I got that sorted I had 100% germination so cleanliness is important.

When the roots penetrate the cube it is time to plant.
