hey guys when do seedlings need light? i have 20 rrf seeds in root riot starter cubes. its day 3 and 10 of them have just sprouted. should i start the flourescents now? thx in advance.

yes the heat should help the others with germination too unless its crazily hot. they need the energy to make more leaves and roots etc. i have some light on since planting just to keep them warm and give them light when they do crack through. and just add more as it progresses

ok cool thx. i have a t5 flourescent above the tray right now. is that enough? because i have more flourescents available.

How long was you planning on keeping them in the RR? When I use them, as soon as I see green they get planted into their final pots under lights.

what wattage/lumens is the t5?
im not sure what is the exact right amount but starting out i would say that is fine for now. more lights would help dry out the medium which is handy for not overwatering but in the root riot cubes im not sure that applies so much.

i think as seedlings you just dont want to burn them with a hps etc but t5s are pretty cool so you probably could add more if wanted but right now might not make a difference, someone who knows what theyre talking about should chime in soon anyway

as a semi educated guess i would say they will be happy under that for a bit and i would add a few more(depending on wattage) after a few days

My plan was to transplant them when the roots push thru the bottom of the rr cube. That's wat I did wen I worked with clones. This is my first grow from seed.

The t5 is 50 watts I believe

i think thats about 4-5000 lumens based on a quick search, that would probably be fine for a short while if youre just germinating and getting them started. but probably wouldnt hurt to add another either unless they run hot. id say wait for someone who does this alot, muddy i think is the new grower mod id say hell pop in at some point with some solid info or you could pm him, hes in alot of threads should be easy to find.

You should be fine, until you see the tap come out the bottom. I wouldn't leave them much longer then that. Young sprouts don't need strong light, but enough to keep the stem from elongating.

Actually the tap is coming out of the bottom already! I didn't realize it would happen so fast. I wanted to wait to transplant because.....well long story. When I was working with clones the roots pushed through the rr alot and they transplanted fine. I'm glad I got your input . I guess ill have to transplant tommorow.
