I noticed something in my 1 gallon grow bags. When I harvest a plant the roots only really occupy the top half of the soil in the pot. The bottom half is basically soil with very little root growth. I’ve noticed this with all of them I’ve harvested in the bags so far. I thought I took pics of the last one but guess I didn’t. Does anyone know what’s causing this? I’m thinking maybe over watering?

I wonder if perhaps you're not saturating the pots completely when you water, roots will want to stay where it's moist/wet, and by the sounds of things the bottom of your pots are perhaps staying dry when you water, sdo the roots won/t travel down, and if they do, they die off, similar to air pruning.

Trick is to water slowly, and allow the medium to really soak up the water, instead of pushing it through fast.

My advice would be to water slowly and until you get a decent amount of runoff inbetween dry periods.

I currently have 12 plants going in .75 gallon plastic pots, water them exactly the same (no runoff) and I have roots growing out of the drain holes on all 12 pots. On the bags I'd say about half of what I water drains out the side of the bags into the saucer and is then soaked up through the bottom. That's why overwatering was my first thought. Thank you for the reply, I will start paying more attention when I'm watering.

I too have experienced this problem with using the fiber pots. Although I use a much larger pot than what you're using. The smallest pot I ever uses is a 5 gallon pot. But I've been using fiber pots for years. So what I did one year and it worked really well. Is that took a trash bag and I cut the bottom of it out and put it down into the fiber pot about 7 or 8 in down in a 25-gallon pot and then filled my soil into the pot. So that when I watered the water couldn't just run out the side of the pot through the side walls of the fiber. I found this to help a lot especially in the winter time in my grow room in my basement where my basement is very dry and it would dry the fiber pots out a lot. So this ultimately helped in Reverse as well.
I found this also to be helpful when I grew outside in fiber pots one year. But ultimately growing outside I ended up learning how to grow just straight into the ground with my custom soil.

I also might add that you could try bottom watering. If you seem to have more problems when using a fiber pot. I bought them water occasionally especially when I have bug problems. As watering from the bottom works really well. You can still water from the top. But bottom watering seems to work ultimately very well when you're having dry issues and you want to get the most use out of your soil.

I'm an organic grower I don't use any chemicals you won't find any Metals in my bud. That's really all I have on this situation take care and happy growing

Don't know if you bought them already but code "10percentrain" gets you 10% off...
I got it at a grow supply store about an hour from where I live. I think I paid 6.50 for a 2 gallon. Not bad at all. If I like them I’ll definitely order some and use that code, thank you.
