what's the difference in running cost between LEDs and cfls?

Depends entirely on the wattage. LED will be more efficient at the same wattage and should give better results but at same wattage running costs are the same..

Led will be cheaper even at equal electrical efficiencies. Leds last 3x as long as cfl.
