Fill pots with what is best bang for the buck results? I have 5 gallon and ten gallon fabric pots. What do you advise and what should I fill them with? What nutrients should I be adding? I need low cost options. I need easy to understand nutrients guide chart. I've had good full root bulbs and I've had absolutely worse results possible. Over the years. I never found or figured this out yet. I've been growing auto flower for years but I skip year's and forget and don't keep up with things. I just grow for my edible use and it lasts long time. I want to have a good grow again but I just half assed a grow medium and wasted two hundred in seeds. I made every mistake again. I need to focus and have a good plan for next effort. Can you help me with this? Thanks

If your in the States, a bag of Happy Frog or Coast of Maine's Growers Choice or Mother Earth's TerraCraft, all good soil made with cannabis in mind, and are very autoflower friendly (not to hot).
As for nutes, any of those 3 make good dry nutes, a bag for veg and a bag for flower stage. 1/4 cup every two weeks til harvest.
It's not a beauty contest, so never stress defects, the end result gets the job done.
Keeping a journal is very useful, when you get that nice grow, you can duplicate it, cause its all written down.

Thanks for helping. So do you leave space in the pot to add more soil? I usually fill pot to top and can't add more medium. Would you choose five gallon or ten gallon pot?

Thanks. I bought all three types. Would it be ok to mix all three types equal amounts? I think I will use five gallon pots and maybe one ten gallon pot.

hello just my 2p worth i would not go over 5 gallon with autos as there is no need for a big pot as the roots wont fill the pot if to big and more chance of over watering i use 3 gallon pots as i have found there is no diffrence in yeld between 3 and 5

I dont see why you could not mix all three. I suggest not mixing them and do each type in a separate pot and see which one works best for you.
5 gallon pots will not require feeding for about 30 days, a 10 gallon should go 50-60 days without feeding. The 10 gallon pot should not even need veg nutes, IMO.

When you all say feeding and topping do you mean just add more of same medium? Or are you adding liquid nutes with watering?

If you want the best possible results with autos I would fill your container with coco/perlite and grow with the water to run off method and synthetic nutes. Growing 100% hydroponically will give your autos that fast vigorous growth and will also extend your veg/preflower time so you’re able to work the plant longer resulting in higher yields.

In my view: The overall cheapest, simplest method, but not with the highest yield, would be to use bagged soil and in bloom feed bloom base nutes and/or supplements. The most cost effective method in terms of yield would likely be coco/perlite with grow and bloom nutrients.

For cost-effective proven high quality and reputation nutrients you likely can't beat MegaCrop and other Greenleaf powder nutrients. I use the 2-part MegaCrop. And GreenLeaf offers MegaCrop 'samples' in 400 gram bags, more than enough for a tent grow, essentially for free (pay shipping).

Depending on your tap or well water, I suggest you use rainwater or invest in a RO system. Better, lower EC/ppm/salts feed water will pay for itself in better quality, yield and avoidance of problems.

I've been trying different soil mixes and pot sizes for a few years now. In general, I have found that some autos just don't yield much no matter the pot size. Recently I used 18-gallon tubs filled with a cheap homemade soil and used drip irrigation. One cultivar yielded an ounce or two while the different cultivar next to it yielded close to 12 ounces.
Here's the thing. If you do some research and make your own soil mix you will save money in the long run. I bought a few bags of Build a Soil 3.0 to fill a tray to grow bed. Not cheap. The first thing I noticed was that my soil was much heavier and lacked drainage. I decided to follow a recipe on the BAS website that was a "coot" mix. The pumice was probably the most expensive part and you use a lot. Good compost and garden soil (clay, sand, silt, organics) and some worm castings. I used some of the craft blend as top dressing once a grow. A lot of soil amendments can be found much cheaper in their raw form or when not specifically designed for cannabis. ex. wollastonite for pottery $0.07 / lb. for cannabis $20/lb. Shop around. A few other things you can find cheaper are rice hulls, worm castings and straw mulch.
I have used the same soil mix for 3 runs using water only and a top dressing halfway through the grow.
I guess it depends on your goals. I've had fun with 3 of each 3 different cultivars in 7-gallon pots. 9 smaller plants in a 5x5 tent. They yielded two times what 2 big photoperiods in the tray to grow that filled the same 5x5 did. Either way will work and I still go back and forth.

I think the best thing you can do if you have it in you is to make your own seeds. That will save you the most money and stress. You can directly sow and thin out the week plants. After a few generations your plants will be more uniform in size and shape etc. And there are so many more reasons and it's fun.
