So here I sit with very sticky fingers after just hanging my first 2 indoor grown plants. A beautiful pair of Purple JEMs grown from seed sharing the same 1.5 ga pot. They started out under CFL (R15?) lamp 24/7.
Then after 10 days or so, they went under the 600 Watt MH lamp 18/6. They showed sex after a couple weeks. I planted 2 seeds in ea pot, hoping for 1 female, but all the other JEMs in soil were male except these 2.
I did have other females, but they were being grown in my Aerogarden:
And in a bubble box type hydroponic rig:
But the two girls in the pot with coco coir seemed to do the best. I had to switch to HPS and 12/12 after 50-60 days to accomodate a couple photos I had given to me. The JEMs didnt seem to care- they flurished:
I really thought they were going to be White Jems, and I think I've mistakenly labeled the pics on some of my posts. But a couple weeks ago they started to color up. They started as a light pink with a gradient to purple. The color is deep in the bud, and can just been seen in the pics:
But after a couple more weeks, when I trimmed off the fan leaves, the color really stood out:
The yield is going to be a couple ounces, and the smoke from the uncured buds is amazing. Uplifting, a lil energetic, good for my muscle spasms and pain. I'm quite sure it'll gain more couchlock narcotic effects as it seasons and cures. I'll post an updated smoke report later.
So, this being my first indoor grow, my first auto grow, really- my first 'real' grow ever, I learned an awful lot. My only other experience comes from helping others with their crops, and growing bag weed seeds outdoors. Heres some things I learned. Im not claiming what I am going to say is better than any other styles, or that its even correct- just that its what I saw on my plants grown under my- possibly unique- conditions...
Autos are where its at... I really cannot wait to be 100% auto. Its hard to do a perpetual grow with only 1 lamp when photos are in the mix.
Im going to do away with my AeroGarden and Hydroponic boxes. They did the best with coir, and I want to focus and learn 1 tek at a time. I may go back to hydros after I "master" coir.
Seeds are easy -too easy- to produce. Pollen gets everywhere easily. Turn off the ventilation before busting out the males! I ended up getting seeds on all my plants from 1 lil Duurtie Dragon male. He was in his own tent until I bagged the balls and applied pollen w a paintbrush. Im anxious if Ill get any autos from my pregger female photos.
Coir dries out fast. Its almost like growing hydro. I used the Techna Flora's "Recipe for Success" nutes, and fed once a week- watering 2x a week besides. I think Im going to try a cheaper nute- Jack's. Pennies a week instead of Twenties!
I used a bubble stone in my watering water during the last 4 weeks or so. Im gonna continue to use that tek. I think the roots benefitted from the extra O2.
Aside from trimming large fan leaves that block out light, Im not going to trim next time. I think I over trimmed trying to get multiple bud sites, and I think the autos develop too fast to make that work. I ended up with lil popcorn nuggs at the trim sites. I want to see what all natural will give me next time.
I used litmus to check pH- both the nute sol AND the run-off I learned (thanx Wiz), but want to get a pH meter for more accurate testing. I also want to get a ppm meter- and learn what it does and how to use it to my advantage.
I distill my own white lightening and ethanol to make tinctures. I kept the carboys in the growroom while it was fermenting. Each one expelled a couple liters of Co2 an hour. (About a 18" balloons worth per hour) I would like to find out how little is still effective as supplimental Co2. Remember, Co2 sinks.
Room temps were 85F while lights were on. I hooked up a couple fans to move the air. I swapped em out for oscculating ones after someone posted that advice on here. It sure makes sense to copy nature. Shes had millions of years practice! The fans dropped temps to 72-75F Lights on, and 65F off. I kept one on full time, and one timed with the lights.
I like the keg cup tiering idea. The less the roots are molested, the better. Start em in a keg cup, and cut off the bottom and plant the cup into a 2 ga pot when ready. I did this tek w/ my DDs, and it cur down on recovery time and incendital loss.
Never fear asking for help on here. I havent seen any flaming, or undue negativity. Everybody on here is super helpful.
The majority of people on "regular" photo forums are anti-auto. Seems the first ones to come out from some places sucked, and it did much to hurt the cred of all future genetics. This just sucks. Autos Rule. Be ready for some defending of this awesome trait if/when posting on photo forums.
Well. Im drained for now. I plan on editing this thread when I remember more stuff that I want to remember. If anyone has any questions or comments, or advice for my next grow, feel free to post away!
