Excuse the lack of pics in this post, I'll post pics as things progress and there is something to see...
Some background on yours truly:
I've grown quite a few times; hydroponic, soil, indoor, outdoor. I even grew lowryder years and years ago, when Joint Doctor was first putting them out there and guys like mdanzig were just starting to toy with making more viable crosses. My experience all those years ago soured me on autos enough to forget about them for all these years. The original strain just hasn't got anything on just about anything else available in states fortunate enough to have medical marijuana legalized. Anyway, after recently losing my outdoor grow spot, I have had to start indoors, in my spare bedroom that used to be my veg room. This made me think that a lowryder varient would be perfect for my needs. Since I can't have a veg are and flowering area, ruderalis strains allow me to grow in a singular area, without having to maintain a mother or take clones, and still get from start (seed) to harvest in 9-11 weeks.
You can imagine what a treat it was for me to find this site. I've found such a wealth of info on these amazing little plants here that I so desperately wish was available my first go round with a ruderalis strain. I feel I'm well on my way to a successful grow armed with all this info and thought I'd post my first grow for anyone interested.
For this grow, I'm using a GrowLab 120 (3'11x3'11x6'7), a 6" vortex fan ducted to a sound-reducing muffler (no filter as its my house - might add one if it gets crazy skunky throughout the hole home), and 600w HPS.
Unfortunately, in setting it all up and testing it for a 24hr period - if I run the light at 100% (600w) canopy temps are going to be in the high 90's F even though the tent is in an air conditioned room. This is forcing me to plan on running the lights at 75% (450w) during flowering to at least keep the temps under 90F (86-88F). I realize thats still not optimal, but I think I'll lose more by setting the light to its lowest setting of 50% (300w) then will to a little heat stress. I may even try 100% for the last week or two if they look like they are handling the heat OK.
Anyway (sorry to ramble, but this is partly all for my own recollection later if I need to go back and see where I screwed up - knock on wood!), I am using Grow More nutrients after studying up on the boards here.
I got a Stealth RO100 reverse osmosis filter because my PPMs from tap are 520! After the RO process I get down to 30ish. I was originally going to go with PH Perfect by Advanced Nutrients, but I honestly just hate mixing all their expensive shit together - although I've used them in hydro and got the best smoke I've ever had with their stuff. Since I have limited mobility these days, I need to keep my regiment simple and relatively fool-proof, so I am trying the Grow More method since its cheap and organic - and I got almost the whole line and its still only like 4 things to mix together total!
I got Sea Grow all purpose (veg) and bloom, as well as Avalanche, Hawaiian Buds, and I would have used their cal-mag but it from what my hydro supply store says has been discontinued. So I am going to use Botanicare calmag instead. I also have some Great White (mycorrhizae/beneficial fungi) and Tarantula (bacteria if I remember correctly) from my last grow which I imagine are still good since they are powders - but I don't think I need because of my choice of growing medium...
I was going to use OF, I've ALWAYS used OF, I already had 2 bags, I even went out and bought Light Warrior for my seeds! Then I read and read some more and decided to scrap it for ProMix HP since it was at my local lowes. Apparently it already has mycorrhizae (benneficial fungi), so I don't think I'll try to add in the Great White this grow.
So yeah... Now to the babies... I looked long and hard for a strain and got a few, but we need only mention the one I'm growing in this grow. I scoured the internets to find regular Joint Doctor's DeiselRyder seeds. I figured as a ruderalis pioneer this would be a very stable and fruitful cross, and since it was so hard to find in regular seed form I figure it must be good - plus I LOVE deisel. I found them finally and got 10. Put 5 in the paper towel method, and three popped within a few days. I planted those 3 and 2 just popped their heads up today! I (being impatient) tried to scratch the seam on the remaining two with a razor, then just threw the other 5 seeds in the paper towel and figure I'm going balls out on this grow.
My plan is this: Gather all the females, and throw in the tent, saving one male outside for pollen, then dousing one of the girls in pollen, leaving out with the male for a day, spritzing with water, then putting it back in the tent to finish with the others - hopefully without cross-pollinating any of them. That should give me a good seed base for future grows. I plan on trying another strain as the seeds dry and become viable, and them doing another grow - saving only females and trying to use colloidal silver to make female seeds for future grows (allowing me to save the regular seeds for emergency or if I need to make more female seeds - so I'm not making female seeds from female seeds over and over again in case that hurts the genetics.
Wish me luck!! More pics to follow as they pop their little heads up!
Oh yeah... I'll be using 7.5L AirPots, and tiering in their starting party cups per the FD method with Muddys modification (party cup with no bottom inside another party cup during seedling growth).
