Salutations Andi,
...good Decission to Buy these Lights?
Sorry as i can't answer your question and i've got more to add!
Could you describe please the lamp's global layout in terms of "nodes"? If you will...
The 5 Watts chip sounds like good news to me as that would promote reduction of this factor i just mentioned. As far as i'm concerned there can be just a handful nodes around 1 single plant less than 40 inches tall. How many of those LED chips i'd want for 1 individual plant? I dunno, yet at least i can argue it's more profitable to grow 2 plants instead of 1, or 3 instead of 2 - which was my plan until the hobby went to a stalled state. Anyway, when multiple plants are present their virtual cells share common sides between the nodes and hence using only 4 lamps, euh... I mean "nodes"... That means for a trio of 5 weeks old plants i'd need no more than 5 nodes to circle them at 1st, then once height has reached 2 feet or so some 2nd stage should be added, raising the amount to 10 nodes...
In my case no more than 4 hours of complementary artificial light was actually required as my sessions were supposed to finish on a window-sill, next to a rocking chair and vaporizer pipe. Etc.
Hummm... But there's a major difference between nodes that can move in 3D around plants compared to a pair of lamp fixtures. Maybe this has been discussed already elsewhere, have you considered using CFLs for side-illumination when the plants are tall? Also, i must mention i don't know what strain(s) is/are on your mind. At some time i thought 18" (dia.) was OKay for 1 plant, if i were to build a cabinet today i'd go for the full 2 feet i can use! Then i'd start reading about induction lamps (85 ~ 90 lm/Watt) with only 1 element, looking for a colder alternative.
In addition induction-light tubes can be manufactured which don't even have wires to fail... That last aspect might give them an edge actually (100000 Hours MTBF), once the technology has been standardized and matured. Then, heat... Etc. Oh my, enjoy the ride! This is a wonderful hobby with plenty of dimensions to explore!
Well i simply hope you get a fair answer to your initial question since i'm curious to read about it myself!...
Good day, have fun!!
