I'm a newbie at this and I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind to comment on this simple but important question. I understand the run off test but if I just want to stick my probe in the dirt and check , should my dirt be wet when checking it . Someone please explain their method of checking just soil ph thanks ! I have a 4 in 1 tester right now but plan to get a better one .

I imagine there is 3 ways of doing it, if the soil is self buffing it's not something you have to be super worried about.

However, the three ways are probably like this.

1. Before feed.
2. After feed.
3. 12 hours after feed or somewhere in the middle.

A pro will chime in shortly on the methods they use, but those three above are what would make sense the most to me.

:pass:

I use the runoff check method, although it isn't the most accurate way of obtaining ph of soil, it gives me a rough idea and let's me know if anythings happening in the root zone

Thanks for the advice . I'll do the run off method till something tells me different. They look pretty good right now .

If I will be having run off, I collect it with a turkey baster, squeezing into a glass mug and then test.

Thanks a lot I'll try that method. Happy growing!

I use an Accurate 8 soil probe. Dryer soils usually have slightly higher pH and wet soils slightly lower pH. I check my pH the next day after feeding. You will also get varying reading depending on the depth you insert the probe. Generally pH is higher at the bottom of the pot. I insert all the way to the bottom when I check.
